To be honest it never occurred to me to equate what was going on in northern Colorado with the Southern Rebellion on 1861-65.
That would certainly seem to be a logical solution. But wouldn't you agree that matters like that need to be worked out ahead of time, and what better way to seal agreement than through a vote in the legislature approving the partition?
The problem is that those in control of the legislature are unlikely to give up their power voluntarily. They can essentially ignore 49% of the population. That happens right now.
I'd prefer some independent judicial body for working these things out -- a kind of divorce court for states.
We could go the other way and combine the six New England states into one state called NewEngland. We would lose 10 liberal senators that way. and 5 stars on the flag.
Not unlike Chicago and Illinois.
From Article IV, Section 3 of the US Constitution:
...but no new State shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or Parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the CongressThe legislature of the State of Virginia did not consent to having part of Virginia territory split to become West Virginia.
But I suspect that when you changed my post to read:
"Funny how the usual suspects havent descended upon this thread to stamp their feet about the evils of secession the south."
what you were really thinking was:
"Funny how the usual suspects havent descended upon this thread to stamp their feet about the evils of the south America".
Well of course you’re right that there are an ample number of lost causers who can’t ever find it in their hearts to say a kind word about America
The federally recognized government did. The US wasn’t going to ask the people shooting at it for their opinion.
True ... but it points out another of Lincoln’s unconstitutional/contradictory actions; he denied that Virginia had left the Union, that it was merely in a state of insurrection, which he was constitutionally-obligated to suppress, but when it came to getting their agreement with splitting the state, per the constitution, their vote didn’t count.
No contradiction. There was a Virginia state “government” that the US recognized and that government granted its permission. If other Virginians disapproved they shouldn’t have been shooting at American troops at the time. Secession (or attempted secession) has its costs.
Actually it did. A body of legislators who remained loyal to the Union was recognized as the legitimate legislature of Virginia and it was this body that approved partition. Since the rest of the legislature was off rebelling they didn't express any opinion on the matter.
Hey, rockrr, why did you alter Pelham’s post?
Why do you ask?
Rocky should be in Oklahoma atoning
“Well of course youre right that there are an ample number of lost causers who cant ever find it in their hearts to say a kind word about America”
I didn’t say that at all. I said I think that you are an America hater. South-hating is just your way of expressing it at FR in a veiled fashion that doesn’t get you bounced.
The continuum between South-haters and America haters is well established. It begins with denigrating southern history and culture, with demands that school names be changed, that flags and symbols be hidden away. The constant drumbeat is that the South and its people were and are evil. You expressed that yourself when you altered my post.
Once this gets accomplished America itself is the target. The majority of American Presidents before 1860 were slaveowners and therefore were evil men. Slavery was legal in America prior to 1860 and therefore the country per se was evil. America’s founding itself becomes tainted with evil. This storyline isn’t hard to find, it’s a well developed theme on the hard Left. I’ve certainly seen it. And I’m sure that you are very, very familiar with it.
Do you think the Lincoln Coven is paid to do this on FR? Professional trolls?
Kudos pelly, that was one of the more absurd and counter-logical posts I’ve seen on these boards.
The evidence of American-hating amongst the Lost Cause Losers is prolific and legendary. Folks who hate everyone and everything that isn’t “south of the MD line” because their beloved cornfederacy didn’t win at their insurrection.
You can’t cite any “anti-southern” posts from me because they don’t exist. I’m proud to say that I love America - I have no reluctance saying it and I don’t feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeel the need to qualify it. And I love the south - even with a few bigoted yayhoos that post their crap notwithstanding. I get great amusement out of gomers who live in a perpetual state of agitation because their ancestors F’d up 150 years ago. People like you.
“You expressed that yourself when you altered my post.”
Bullspit. Your earlier post was an idiotic strawman and I mocked it. If it makes you cringe it is because I ht too close to home. All of your insinuations are equally BS and you would be ashamed - if you were capable of shame.
“And Im sure that you are very, very familiar with it.”
Yea, I am because of morons like you who constantly regurgitate it as a lamer method of inoculation against your own bigotry.
Why’s that puss?
