I give a fig?
It’s an intramural fight and I say “Have it”, while i cheer... for both sides.
There’s enough reference points——the minaret is now that pile of white rock rubble in the corner. But I say flatten it. In spite of international “rules” the Nazis found out that hiding in churches, etc. wouldn’t save them, or the churches. Same thing here. If the Syrians were proud of this stuff they wouldn’t hold it hostage by hiding in it. We’ll see soon enough whether they have the grit to actually repair any of it or whether it will just lay there like ancient Babylon, or the Acropolis, or the Coloseum, orrrr——take your pick. If this stuff was built with someone elses money it will probably never even be cleaned up. They’ll just start a new town just up the road, complete with one-hole terlets and all the convenience of a tent city.
I’m still wagering crazy nutjob Muslims will some how destroy the pyramids in Egypt.
“IN AMERICA WE HAD SHERMANS MARCH TO THE SEA. But that didnt matter, because it was our own civil war...”
How many 1000 year-old structures did Sherman destroy?
Besides, who, besides you, says it didn’t matter? Most of us are over the brooding, all caps, stage of mourning. Clearly, you need more time to cycle through the stages of grief.
While you’re taking that time, I invite you to do your homework on the post-Sherman’s March fallout. You’ll find that it did matter to people.
Rock the Casbah!
Warsaw, at the end of WWII was much worse off.
