One thing I wish conservatives would more often stress (or for that matter consistently grasp themselves) is that civilized society requires reciprocity. Those who blindly do good unto others without regard for what the others do unto them will find themselves repaid not with kindness, but rather with exploitative contempt. If an opponent is fighting fair, fight fair. Even if an opponent deviates a little from fighting fair, try to steer the fight in a civilized direction. If an opponent shows no interest in fighting fair, however, fight back with no holds barred and tell him to fight clean if he wants a clean fight.

I agree wholeheartedly. Unfortunately, most people cannot see beyond their own desire, and trust that those who wield power are magically immune to its corrupting influence. They are content to weave the rope used to hang themselves.
