Obamas attend church prior to White House swearing-in

A boisterous chant of “forward” rolled from the pews of a District church Sunday , echoing the sermon and a campaign slogan of Barack Obama as the president attended a spirited worship service at one of the capital’s oldest African American congregations.

The First Family and relatives spent about an hour at the Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church, before departing for his official swearing in to start his second term.

They exited church shortly after 10:30 a.m. heading to the noontime ceremony in the White House.

The church service knit the secular with the sacred.

The congregation rose to sing “Happy Birthday” to Michelle Obama, who turned 49 Thursday, and also broke into a call and response as Metropolitan’s pastor, the Rev. Ronald E. Braxton, turned to Exodus Chapter 14 for his sermon.

AME Zion. It’s an offshoot of the Methodist Church, going back to the era of forced segregation. They are not Episcopalian, that is a Biblical reference to the nature of the church organization.

So, they’re black Methodists.

How can participating in post trial racism do anything but make racism worse? Blacks are already racist enough. Go home, and praise the Lord you live in a land where a jury can still overturn the injustice of the system. Pray for George Zimmerman and his family. May God spare him from the evil of this upside down society.

There have been other occasions when I used the expression "shelf life" to indicate that some things simply wither on the vine. I was drastically wrong on one occasion when I forecast a quick demise of protests.

I would wait until next Saturday evening to see whether this has any momentum. I think it will fizzle. It will be interesting to watch the progress of these protests.

The senior pastor at Seattle’s Mt. Zion Baptist Church told followers to “raise Cain” in response to Saturday’s acquittal of George Zimmerman in Sanford, Florida.
