It was his career blowing up in his face.
To: BenLurkin
So this flash of light somehow altered his approach profile?

It doesn’t appear that they knew they were in trouble till it was already too late. I doubt a flash of light would have made much difference a few seconds out.

He should have pulled out sooner in that case and the copilot should have taken over. It could have been taliban, alkiada...

It’s possible someone was pointing a laser at the plane. If true, it would be interesting to see if a careful examination of surveillance video sheds any light on the identity of the culprit.

I’m not buying it unless what was said on the cockpit recorder somehow verifies it.

I will no longer believe any stories of lasers causing airplane crashes after watching the Egyptian footage of helicopters circling the crowds. Those helicopters looked like they were painted green and red from all the hundreds of lasers on them, and the pilots cruised around without a care.
To: eartrumpet
LOL good point. The choppers looked like they were lit up with strobe lights.

Right. What was the altitude and speed of the plane when this flash occurred?
To: BenLurkin
unless he saw sunlight bouncing off the water cause he was short... cBS!!!

Exactly. How did a flash change his speed and approach.
To: BenLurkin
I doubt that it was a laser. He's well over the Bay at that point, and coming in at 280 degrees at 12:00PM, when the sun is straight overhead.
Unless someone was on the tarmac pointing a laser at the plane, or someone in a car on the San Mateo Bridge, or someone was on a boat in the water between the plane and the runway, I doubt it's possible to flash the pilot at that point in the approach.
BTW, there are always windsurfers in the Bay off of the runway who are riding the wake from the planes.

I read today that one of the relief pilots said the nose was so high that the runway couldn’t be seen by the crew. So did this so-called flash of light come from the sky?

Well this proves that it wasn’t mechanical error. The pilots wouldn’t be making such trasnparent claims otherwise.
