Uncertainty persists over Egypt PM nomination

Reports of Mohamed ElBaradei being picked are denied, highlighting challenges new leaders face in finding consensus.
Last Modified: 07 Jul 2013 09:56

The continuing chaos in Egypt in the aftermath of last Wednesday’s military coup has been compounded further after the choice of liberal politician Mohamed ElBaradeias interim prime minister was thrown into doubt by objections from conservative groups.

ElBaradei’s nomination had been confirmed by several sources and state media on Saturday, but just before midnight a presidential spokesman told reporters that no prime minister had yet been chosen.

“After some satellite channels declared that the new government will be announced tonight and mentioned the new prime minister’s name (referring to Elbaradei), I’m here to confirm that this is still a prediction and that it is still under consultation and negotiations,” Ahmed el-Musilamani, spokesman for the interim president Adly Mansour said in a public statement.

The abrupt U-turn came amid opposition to ElBaradei’s appointment by the Nour Party, Egypt’s second-largest religious force that backed the military coup that toppled President Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood.

The dispute has highlighted the challenges the military faces in finding consensus among liberals and conservatives on who should run the country.

The Al-Nour Party’s deputy leader Ahmed Khalil told the state news website that the party would withdraw from the political transition process if ElBaradei was confirmed in his post.

Is he or isn’t he? ElBaradei appointment as Egypt’s PM thrown into doubt

http://www.presstv.ir/usdetail/312680.html

The White House has broken its silence over recent chaos in Egypt, rejecting Washington’s support of “specific political parties” in the country.

“The United States categorically rejects the false claims propagated by some in Egypt that we are working with specific political parties or movements to dictate how Egypt’s transition should proceed,” a White House statement said on Saturday.

The statement came after Farid Ismail of the Muslim Brotherhood’s political wing, the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), told Reuters that ElBaradei was “Washington’s choice,” not that of the people of Egypt.

According to the statement, U.S. President Barack Obama “reiterated that the United States is not aligned with, and does not support any particular Egyptian political party or group.”

Interim Egyptian President Adly Mahmud Mansour reportedly decided to appoint leading opposition figure Mohamed ElBaradei as the interim prime minister of the country following the ouster of President Mohamed Morsi.

Meanwhile, the New York Times reported that U.S. national security advisor Susan Rice had told Morsi’s team that the president would leave office an hour before his ouster by the military.

Is Obama Backing ElBaradei?
by FRANKLIN LAMB

Beirut

According to well-connected Washington sources, one being a Congressional staffer whose job description includes following political events in Egypt, it did not take Mohamed Mustafa ElBaradei, the Sharia legal scholar, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, and for 12 years the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) (1997-2009), very long at all to contact the Washington, DC law firm of Patton Boggs on 7/2/13. That is once it became evident that Egyptian President Mohamad Morsi might well be ousted by Egypt’s Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF). The next day, ElBaradei’s representatives reportedly also made contact with the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations which claims to represent the 52 largest US based largest Jewish groups.

(snip)

ElBaradei’s campaign, as reported in the 4/4/13 edition of the New York Times also worked hard to convince the White House of what he called the necessity of forcibly ousting President Morsi, presenting several arguments that included documentation that Morsi had bungled the country’s transition to an inclusive democracy and wasted a year without following thru on any of his pledges or addressing the problems of:

Morsi Spurned Deals, Seeing Military as Tamed

EXCERPTS

The foreign minister said he was acting as an emissary of Washington, the advisers said, and he asked if Mr. Morsi would accept the appointment of a new prime minister and cabinet, one that would take over all legislative powers and replace his chosen provincial governors.

(snip)

His top foreign policy adviser, Essam el-Haddad, then left the room to call the United States ambassador, Anne W. Patterson, to say that Mr. Morsi refused. When he returned, he said he had spoken to Susan E. Rice, the national security adviser, and that the military takeover was about to begin, senior aides said.

“Mother just told us that we will stop playing in one hour,” an aide texted an associate, playing on a sarcastic Egyptian expression for the country’s Western patron, “Mother America.”

(snip)

Mr. Morsi’s advisers had meetings with Ms. Patterson and her deputy as well as a phone call with Ms. Rice, the national security adviser. Mr. Morsi’s advisers argued that ousting the president would be “a long term disaster” for Egypt and the Arab world because people would “lose faith in democracy.” They said it would set off an explosion in the streets that they could not control.

And they argued that the United States was implicated: “Nobody who knows Egypt is going to believe a coup could go forward without a green light from the Americans.”

IF obama has rejected morsi in favor of elbaradei, which I doubt, it is because iran rejected morsi. elbaradei is their boy. But I think morsi paid them due deferene so I don’t think that’s it. obama is much more in tune with morsi.

The fact the Alqa'eda Flag continues to fly among them, without a hand taking it down,...speaks volumes...and continues to be seen in their protests.. without objection from the crowd.

Actions speak louder than words....non-action equally as much.

Former presidential candidate Hazem Salah Abu-Ismail detained over allegations he incited murder of anti-Morsi protestersAhram Online, MENA, Sunday 7 Jul 2013
Egyptian prosecutors have ordered the detention of Salafist leader Hazem Salah Abu-Ismail for inciting the murder of anti-Morsi protesters.

The former presidential candidate was arrested at his home on Friday. He can be held for up to 15 days.

Abu-Ismail allegedly incited violence that led to the deaths of nine protesters in Giza.

He has been transferred to Tora prison, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.

Nationwide clashes since Mohamed Morsi’s ouster on Wednesday have killed at least 37 people and injured over 1,400.

Earlier on Sunday, four senior Muslim Brotherhood leaders were arrested on charges of inciting the killing of anti-Morsi protesters outside the group’s headquarters in Cairo on 30 June.

This is circulating in Egypt to be circulating to the world in general and Americans in particular.

The Arabic portion of the message says to 0b0z0 and some of “his” media: hands off Egypt, IT’S NOT A MILITARY COUP!

The English portion is very important. It informs Americans in particular what the bunch of terrorist MB , did/are doing and praying to hurt America!

To avoid the Arabic portion, start @ 0.40 until about 3.40 and hear the passionate message to Americans and 0b0z0.

DON’T MISS IT, IT’S VERY WELL SAID AND INFORMATIVE!

Here’s the email message, please distribute:

Who will have the WATER RIGHTS of the NILE????

As the conflict continues in Egypt, regardless of who ultimately leads the nation....the Waters of the Nile River will become an International Affair of Immense Proportions IMO.....and could easily create a War sitution for the next Administration.....it is a 'huge hot button issue'....

Exerts from various news sources indicate:

Currently Ethiopia is pressing forward with the construction of its 'Grand Renaissance Dam' on the Blue Nile River, which will be the 10th largest dam worldwide.

The conflict is that Egypt believes its "historic rights" to the Nile are guaranteed by two treaties from 1929 and 1959 which allow it 87 percent of the Nile's flow and give it 'veto power' over upstream projects.........But a new deal was signed in 2010 'by other Nile Basin countries', including Ethiopia, allowing them to work on river projects.... 'without Cairo's prior agreement'.

The conflict between Sudan and Egypt (downstream states) and the rest of Nile Basin countries (upstream countries) began when Cairo and Khartoum refused to sign the NBI Framework Convention since it did not explicitly guarantee Egypt’s right to 55.5 billion cubic square metres of water annually and did not allow Egypt its traditional veto of upstream projects.

The Renaissance Dam is 'one of four' dams which Ethiopia plans to construct on the Blue Nile, one of two main tributaries that provide Egypt with 60 per cent of its annual share of 55.5 billion cubic metres of water....Egypt can expect to lose at least seven billion cubic metres of its share of water once the Grand Renaissance Dam is finished.” ...expected completion 2016.

“Ethiopia will be the biggest exporter and controller of energy in East Africa. It will soon be exporting energy to Somalia and Djibouti in the east, Kenya and Uganda in the south, Sudan and South Sudan in the west, and to Egypt and Europe in the north
