There's just one more selection tonight, but two versions because we lost not only Trevor Bolder to cancer this week, but also Ray Manzarek, keyboardist of The Doors and co-writter of this next song. If I find time tomorrow, maybe I'll post some of Ray's work. Until then . . .

Ray Manzarek met Jim Morrison at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where both studied as film students. After school had ended in 1965 Manzarek and Morrison met by chance on Venice Beach. Morrison told Ray he had written some songs, and Manzarek expressed an interest in hearing them. Morrison sang a rough version of the song "Moonlight Drive" and Manzarek liked it and co-founded the Doors with Morrison at that moment. Manzarek then recruited drummer John Densmore and guitarist Robby Krieger at a Transcendental Meditation lecture. The rest is acid-rock history. Ray was not just responsible for the formation of The Doors, he was an intergral part of their sound handling keyboards and bass lines. It was Ray who introduced Jim to the English writer Aldous Huxley whoses famous quote led to the band's name: "There is the known and the unknown, in between are doors."
On May 20, 2013, almost 32 years after Morrison's passing on July 3, 1971, Ray Manzarek lost his long battle with bile duct cancer at a hospital in Rosenheim, Germany, at the age of 74. Peace out Ray.
