I just moved from IN and saw the work Mitch Daniels did as governor. He took over from a Democrat governor sequence (Bayh, O’Bannon, Kernan) who left the state with almost $4 billion in debt. Daniels leaves the office with a surplus and may even refund some of that surplus to taxpayers. Daniels is a no-nonsense politician who quietly got things done. He reduce state (non-educational) employees by 10% and made massive cuts in spending. He can do this because Indiana law allows the governor to veto spending passed by the legislature. Now, IN is one of the healthiest states in terms of its economic position and is extremely pro-business. If it works in IN, my guess is that it would work in other states, too. Lastly, Daniels often said there’s no such thing as a free lunch and his policies proved it. Those people who want “free” cradle-to-grave care and free cell phones may want to look elsewhere...they won’t fit in there.
You Yankees know how to take a good rapin’.
