Sure, this varies with jurisdiction - but political appointees are even less accountable than elected officials. And no less likely to bend to political pressure.

It was obvious from your comments that you knew, but yours was a convenient post to post my reply with the numbers. A lot of people, even here on FR, have no clue on the difference in effectiveness for various calibers and barrel lengths.

I do not KNOW anything but what people that I do not know and people that I do not know the politics of... say happened. These same people did not have a single report correct for the first 8 hours. I do not believe any government officials any longer. I can guarantee you that I am an expert in firearms... I have my own private shooting range that I use regularly and I know what rifles and handguns can do in the right hands and using the right tactics. I used to shoot Three Gun and I have competed since I was a kid. My argument is not with you... my argument is that government of all shapes and sizes have lost their credibility and we all know that the press lies like Goebbells and that was my concern.

The reason is that they LOOK intimidating and all dims are basically cowards and mostly... because gun owners love that stuff. I can legally buy and own a suppressor in Mississippi... I have an application in to purchase one now... Federal Tax Stamp etc... so that I can shoot on my private range without bothering anyone living near me. My closest neighbor is about half a mile away. From my cold, dead hands.

...were fitted with accessories including flash suppressors that made them illegal assault weapons ...What is it about them evil flash suppressors that makes the commies so upset? Do they make the bullet hurt more when it hits? Same with telescoping stocks (I'd sacall them "user-adjustable" and "shock absorbing") and bayonet fittings. I would think that they would be much happier if folks with these "assault" weapons would leave them unloaded and just go around stabbing people - problem odf shootings on the way to being solved.

All one has to do is shoot a .308/7.62 NATO or shoot a .223/5.56 NATO and I can guarantee you that the shooter will know what a High Powered caliber versus a pop gun caliber is all about. The .223/5.56 NATO round was developed so that the Military could carry more ammo into battle and reduce the cost of the ammo along with the weight. Both will kill you dead... but the argument here is that those that are wanting to take away the US Constitution are not even fluent in terminology... much less reality.

“I just googled ..what weapon was used...”
Well, then, that settles it! If it’s on the internet it must be true.
Let me adjust my tinfoil hat...there are people who misrepresent themselves professionally that can shape this story any way they see fit.

Yes, and the ones that do know something are willing to play to the ignorant and use scare tactics and emotional lies to get their job done.
Tom Brokow on Meet The Press Sunday held up a Shot Gun News, which he implied he subscribed to, and described the “AR Platform”, and that there are an infinite variety of AR modifications available. (And he hunts birds.) So I believe he understands fairly well. But his comment on the infinite variety was meant to show how hard it is to pin down an assault rifle definition.
I guess if David Gregory could show a magazine, he could too.

Let’s be generous: A 240 gr projectile coming out of a 7.5 in barrel @ 1500 fps has 5 Ft-Lb per grain resulting in 1200 Ft-Lb on my calculator. That being a VERY hot load.
I see the point you are trying to make. The 55 gr 3100 fps .223 REM muzzle energy is 1250 Ft-Lb, making the muzzle energy of both about the same.
I think the media attached “high power” to an article where a crossbow was mentioned. It’s just too hard to resist using that zinger to keep the sheeple wetting themselves into voting our rights away.

I thought to myself that I had chosen the wrong occupation.Me too. $175k and you can shoot anyone you want and never face any significant consequences. I always consider 98% of government workers to be takers rather than makers when you apply the free market transaction criterion to what they do (would I voluntarily participate in an exchange of my money for the "work" that they do?) Heil Bloomberg.

You are correct.
My AR-15’s recoil just enough that you know you are not shooting an air rifle.
