Most of the early reports said that 37 people were evacuated from the consulate to Tripoli. Plus four dead equals 41.

I cannot vouch for the absolute accuracy of that figure but it is what was reported in several publications at the time and I have seen no other reports on those survivor-evacuees since then. It is difficult to find those early reports now through searches FWIW. I wish I had bookmarked more of them but it took me a couple of days to realize that I would want an extensive file on this.
