Ridding the U.S. of oil-based energy and avoiding the catastrophic consequences of climate change are the primary goals of the Democratic Party platform That's it. They just jumped the shark.
Another possibility might be that they are only adding all of this crazy stuff to their platform because that motivates the grassroots and besides the politicians have no intention of following through.
Kind of like our side.

Watch the convention for a Wellstone moment. That’s all that’s missing. Somebody major has got to step up to the mike in prime time, and complete wig out. They can rant, say a provable falsehood, or make it painfully clear that they’re living in lala land, personally attack Mitt or Ryan, or publicly embrace communism/Islam/post-colonialist gibberish, or any other form of political suicide. Once that happens, it’s over, except for the celebrating. The only thing that can save them then is if Mitt completely blows a debate or says something stupid or racist. I can feel the Wellstone moment coming. My bones are aching and the air is electric with expectation.

Oil isn't going anywhere. The enemies within the USA cannot blow it up, make it sink,
cover it with a curtain, or ignore it as it washes onto the shores of the West coast.
When fuel costs Americans 10-50% of their earnings maybe then we as a whole will
wake up to the sabotage the democrats have planned and implemented to
our greatest country on the planet.
