The media didn't invent the "war on women" theme this week.

Obama launched it months ago, and its terms were quite clear: any opposition to the broadest possible variation of reproductive rights could only arise from ignorance or animus towards women.

The defense to this was Republicans were opposing abortion and mandatory birth control in health plans for other reasons (sanctity of life and religious freedom, respectively) -- and this was essentially a winning defense for anyone without strict ideological views.

Now, along comes Akin, and he guts that defense. He stakes out the most extreme corner of the pro-life position (no abortion even in the case of rape), and justifies not by a militant appeal to innocent infant life (two wrongs don't make a right), but instead through a rationale which perfectly combines ignorance and animus -- ignorance that rape doesn't result in pregnancy, and animus (the implication that pregnant women claiming rape are liars).

Neither did the Congress, or for that matter the Republican voters in 2006.

From a Conservative standpoint Bush will never be remembered as a noteworthy President. Still he wasn’t as bad as the Dem meme make him out to be......(or for that matter some of the more ardent on the right)

You know what? This Aikin crap is happening in August. August! Do you know how short the attention span of the ignorant chattering class is these days? During the next two months there will be about fifty more “big news” items for the ignorati and the Democrat “mainstream” newsrooms to gnaw on and be outraged by, etc. In the end, this gaffe is small potatoes.

The point is, be grateful this didn’t happen in October.
