Later, I would discover that the entire time I was there the Senior Chief in charge at the Navy barracks was soliciting sex from female recruits. I was totally oblivious to what was going on! Since you were a student it is understandable that you would be unaware, particularly since those in some power had an interest in hiding it.
But to make the analogy work here, you would have had to be the Chief's supervisor or base commander. In those cases, it is a part of their responsibility and training to look out for this and to PROTECT the students.

Paterno won his first game against the University of Soddom and Gamorah. This scandal doesn’t involve some new-fangled “terminology” or acts.

There was a time and place where sodomy was not discussed at all. Was that before biblical times?

But it's only naive, if you read the papers and understand that people actually do these things. What about that assistant coach who says he told Paterno about the shower incident? Paterno did nothing about it. That's not naive, that's willful ignorance in order to protect a friend at the expense of young boys.
Paterno's lucky he died. He had a LOT coming down on him due to his inaction and protection of Sandusky.

And if you believe that Paterno did not know what sodomy meant, I have a bridge I would like to sell you. the term might have escaped him...but I am sure he heard of ‘buggery’, ‘bone smuggling’, or butt f******.
just because he never new the exact meaning of a word (biblically, sodomy means a plethora of perversions)did not mean that Joe Pa was some sort of blank slate with no knowledge of worldly things.

I suspect Paterno was such a powerful intimidating figure and getting up their in age that no one wanted to confront the guy and put their career in jeopardy I suspect the coaching staff were concerned about their career path that they knew enough about Paterno to not rock the boat and hope for the best. I am just guessing their was a deep denial factor too that someone from his era like to be exist in.

And we can expect another report about alumni who were with Sandusky assaulting boys on planes. This isn’t over.

Soooo, we are expected to believe that Paterno coached men's football for what, five or six decades at a major university and never heard homosexual terms and words - and never was inquisitive enough to ask their meaning? I suggest that Paterno was either dumb as a sack of hammers or was lying - maybe both....

Perhaps Paterno should not have been allowed to run the Penn St. football program with his obviously diminished mental faculties. The administration was such a bunch of weenies when it came to Paterno and let him run all over them.
To: Zakeet
The book also details the long and frosty relationship Paterno had with Sandusky while they worked together at Penn State.Ooops -- there goes one of the lynchpins of the hate Paterno crowd.
To: Uncle Chip
They didn’t exactly “work together.” Paterno was the boss and could have fired him.

Well, no other defense has worked for the JoPologists, so the “I never heard crude locker room jokes in sixty five years of football, and am too stupid to understand them anyway” defense is the only thing they haven't tried.
Pretty pathetic.
Both that they would try it, and the man they are trying it for.

What about that assistant coach who says he told Paterno about the shower incident? Yeah, that's bad. I can believe that somebody could fail to comprehend that people could do such things. It's hard to believe that he failed to follow up, though.

I don’t if he did not know about screwing young men up the .... Joe was responsible for what happens in his team. That is why you get the big bucks.

I had a similar experience at a old job.
I don't think any of these coaches who were at PS as a stepping stone to the NFL wanted to rock the boat with the legend Paterno by talking about Sandusky . They assumed it was being taken care of and best not get involved.

Since Curley and Schultz were going to report Sandusky back in 98, and then Curley changed his mind after talking to Paterno, I have a hard time believing Paterno was that naive.Never happened. Sandusky was being investigated by the Department of Public Welfare in 1998 but the investigation was suspiciously cut short and brought to an end for no apparent reason, even though the DPW was aware of five more kids involved.
Curley did change his mind apparently in 2001, but that was after talking to Sandusky's charity CEO -- child psychologist Dr Jack Raykovitz.
To: snoringbear
The guy was probably living in a bubble by 1998 .
He was in his 70’s and considered a living legend at PSU.
No male coach was going to race off and have a blunt confrontation with the campus legend and screw up there career.
As for the guy who said he told the coach well Paterno is dead so its real convenient.

Your dispute is with the author. Those are his words not mine.
That being said, for what reason should he have fired him??? He was a tenured professor of PE. He did in fact though encourage him to take early retirement which he did.

They were Obama supporters? Source, please, because everything I have read indicated they were conservative Republicans. If I remember correctly, either Joe or his son campaigned for McCain (?).
