I am guessing that the point at which Paterno is “devastated” doesn't come until the end when the truth about Sandusky’s serial raping of little boys is out in the open. Until then, Paterno sleeps quite well at night and deposits his big buck checks every payday.

I believe he blackmailed the administration with what he knew about those kids. That's how he held on to his job so long. I also believe he killed himself with an OD. He was not a good person, in my opinion.
I graduated from the University of Alabama in 1982. I've seen hero worship up close. It's a strange thing.
