“The more I listen to the Beatles over the years, I am convinced that Lennon simply rode on Paul’s coattails.”

I agree. I’m a huge Beatles fan and I’ve always thought that John was way over blown. He’s not as good as many have praised him to be. I don’t think he was the “brainy” one.

I always liked the songs written by Paul and George. Paul’s were usually simple love songs and songs about people. George was on a quest to find God in his songs. He was looking for enlightenment.

Hell, even the songs of Ringo had more humanity in them than those written by John. John seemed to always be trying to live up to the “genius” label that so many tried to attach to his writings. I guess I never saw it myself.

I liked John, but I never saw him as a genius or as the best song writer of the bunch.

How John treated his wife and son (Cynthia and Julian) turned me off of anything John had to say about love and people. How could a man who abandoned his son be a voice for how to love one another?

He could play with words to make a song catchy, but his ability to preach ideas to us was drowned out by his own behavior towards his first wife and son.

Allow me to expand - thank you for your kind words.

Maybe the most over _hyped_ band. Lots of advertising, and quite a few talented people behind the scenes, like George Martin who was able to combine his technical expertise into marketing a new genre.

Seems to me an awful lot of material was just sub par, yet the scraps from the cutting room floor are received As Great Wisdom from adherents. I shouldda known better. Hm. To add insult to injury, the “British Invasian” spawned a host of American imitators, so slicked up plastic hippies with a guitar and amplifier trolling around the countryside corrupting our youth with bad drugs and psychobabble. Very talented musicians weren’t able to
ply their wares in quite the same way, as they weren’t “cool” or “hip”.
