His pension wasn’t too much just about $22,000 combined with his janitor salary he was making about $48,000. It is about the same as he was making at the mill. I’ll also bet he got the janitors job at the school as a reward for his activism.
I see Joe as one of those “little world” guys. They sit around and talk for hours at a time about chances in their hands and they slipped away. It’s a rehearsed story that they give to every neighbor, church member, and relative. The problem is....it tends to be only half true. They’ve forgotten the facts and just slipped in various pieces which are imaginary.
It would be curious to bring out a relative from his dead wife’s family and let them tell you the “rest of the story” as Paul Harvey would always tell.
