I was wondering (it sounds about like a 50/50 or maybe 40/60 chance to me) whether someone in the Carter Adminisration put Sally Ride in the program so they could spring a "SURPRIZZZE" on the People later on .... but then along came President Reagan, and the leftwingo presidential air cover was gone for a gay "psyop"/"information operation" (propaganda coup) outing Ride in, say, a sympathetic TIME magazine.
Very strange take on the Carter years -- long before gays became a major factor and divisive issue in national politics.
