I do not know if you remember, but just after my wife was layed off from her job, a guy in Tacoma Washington killed a couple of polices and others in a rampage up there. That was about 08 or 09. The guy was diagnosed “full blown” and was out on the streets on his own and was NOT TAKING his medications.
I often wonder how many homicides are actually committed by SMI people. Of course one can become a nut case by enjoining themsleves into a cult, or other..like the democrat party has become.
What do you want? Lock people up because someone says they are crazy?
It's not illegal, but when someone no one in the building knew anything about is buying ammo by the thousands of rounds, that might raise some suspicion, if anyone had seen him moving large amounts. Not many apartment dwellers buy ammo in those quantities.
And I bet few if any had ever been inside his apartment. Many people would have become very suspicious if they'd had knowledge of the sort of items Holmes was acquiring, all legally. But, of course, no one knew.
There are pictures showing hem being arrested at an OWS location.
How would anyone know that he was bringing a bunch of ammo into his apartment? Ammo is shipped in cardboard boxes like any other parcel, and only the blue and white “ORM-D” sticker is likely to give anything away.
And even if anybody knew he was buying bulk ammo...it’s not illegal (in fact it’s a way to save money in the long run), and for all anybody knew he just went shooting on the weekends like most bulk buyers do. (Even if you’re just shooting a bolt action, 100 rounds can go by kinda fast....)
Think whatever you will, but since Holmes was unknown to all his neighbors, if they had known about a few of the items he was acquiring, some would have wondered what he was up to. How suspicious they might have become would have depended upon how much they might have learned. There was a great deal to learn about Holmes and all his recent acquisitions.
People can engage in all sorts of legal behavior, the sum of which might justifiably raise suspicion, or draw the attention of law enforcement. We have the same possibility when people are acquiring ingredients needed to make crystal meth, or to make moonshine.

I moved to teh east coast a couple years ago and have enjoyed Chick-fil-a several times. The service is phenominal and I support their Christian principles. They just announced that they are going to build one near my house. My 16 year old son wants to get a job there.

So, the solution is, if someone in an apartment buys lots of ammo, you turn him into the police for. . .?
Or, if someone never lets someone into their apartment, you tell the police it’s suspicious and they. . .?
We don’t restrict large ammo purchases to those who live in mansions or on farms. The fact that you might be suspicious of somebody can’t prevent someone from committing a crime. It’s interesting afterwards, but we can’t prohibit ammo purchases based on the amount, or investigate apartments if someone is introverted.

Years ago, Timothy Mcveigh was the security guard at the condo down the block from where I live. My best friend lived there at that time and she said he was very nice! SHOCKING!
You're sounding more and more ridiculous. This guy spent months conspiring to commit this atrocity. He purchased all sorts of weapons and ammo, and flammable and explosive substances. It is a crime to conspire to commit such crimes.
I've pointed out before that, in the past few years, several kids plotting school shootings have been found out and prevented from carrying out their plans. If someone had been able to observe enough of Holmes' planning activities they might have put the pieces together and notified the police.
This is not a second amendment issue, but an issue of citizens noticing if someone's activities have become so unusual that they might be planning to commit a crime, or already committing some crimes. I'd bet having flammable and explosive substances in that apartment was illegal.
It's a pity someone wasn't able to notice Holmes' large ammo purchases, and body armor purchases, and purchases of flammable and explosive substances, or maybe he took some from university labs. There's a lot more to be learned about this.
Wow, no I had not heard. But not taking meds, once again. Multiply that by thousands of others out there, and you do have a social crisis that needs fixing. Thanks for that info, just wow.

He was seriously mentally ill and a risk to society. He had homicidal tendencies. It was later determined that he was supposed to be taking medication.
Look at Ted Bundy..there was another one.
Point is, when these nut cases go off..they really go off. And they are allowed to walk the streets without case managers watching them.

Yes Will88, conspiracy is a crime. But getting weapons and ammo and explosive substances is not evidence of a conspiracy.
People buy these things all the time. It does not necessarily follow they are planning a massacre.
Had he COMMUNICATED intention to commit mass murder, yes, that should be noted/investigated. But simply buying or storing weaponry is not an investigatable crime.
As for the kids at Columbine, yes, they are children (so don’t have the rights of adults and can be investigate for stockpiling anything). I am glad that adults and other kids over the years have intervened. Usually, there is some sort of communication or threats made, anyway, which would lead to an investigation.
Insisting that a person who buys weaponry in whatever you consider to be “large” amounts and stores them in a dwelling place you find inappropriate like an “apartment” needs to be investigated is what is ridiculous, in my opinion. It is every man’s right to be armed to the level he desires, and it is no evidence of conspiracy to commit any crime.
I wondered the same thing. What did the caller ask her and how was she so sure? And she said, “you’ve got the right person,” as opposed to, “Yes, that’s my son.”
