Grassleys letter (link in post #38) may be old news to some, but it was an eye-opener to me!

I could be wrong, but I speculate that the Mexican govt is somehow complicit in this caper.

as I understand it the Mex Govt was made aware of the plan where the guns were actually tracked under Bush, but one of the distinctions with F & F was the guns weren't tracked and the Mex Govt was kept in the dark

I’m a little fuzzy on the details, but there was a thread in the last few days that made some kind of connection with Obama’s only political loss and the failure of some kind of gun control legislation. The implication was that F&F was likely his idea to make up for the earlier disgrace. Someone along the way has pointed out that the Mexican drug cartels abandon their weapons that they have used at crime scenes so that there is no way to trace the weapons to the criminals. The drug business is lucrative enough that the lost weapon cost is insignificant.

When the administration became aware of the modus of operation, the idea was to sell weapons to the cartels, the weapons would show up at the crime scene and provide impetus for stricter gun laws here.

Attorney General Holder has assured the public that he takes this matter very seriously, stating that “to the extent we find that mistakes occurred, people will be held accountable.”

There were no "mistakes in Fast and Furious.

All the gunrunning and murder went exactly as planned. Everything that occurred was deliberate -- except for the honest agents who blew the whistle on the crimes.

In my #47, I copied and pasted Holder's remarks from the letter -- directly into the FR editor.

Try pasting into a simple text editor...

"why isn't the President of Mexico screaming?"

Good question. Maybe he is afraid one of those "walked" .50 BMG cal sniper rifles will be turned on him if he speaks out...

El Presidente de Mexico is a Socialist like Obama. Birds of a feather and all that.

Why aren't ranking Democrats screaming? Birds of a feather and all that.

I know why Two Federal Agents and 200 Mexican Nationals aren't screaming.

"... the idea was to sell weapons to the cartels, the [abandoned] weapons would show up at the crime scene and provide impetus for stricter gun laws here."

Your conclusion makes perfect sense.

"why isn't the President of Mexico screaming?"

He may be. But the MSM will never report it.

Their AG has been pretty vocal, though.

Shall vote against Holder contempt for Fast and Furious

The House of Representatives and the White House sought an agreement that avoided a vote after he invoked an “executive privilege”

WASHINGTON, June 27. - The House today announced that the vote will proceed on Thursday of contempt against Attorney General Eric Holder for documents shelter operation “Fast and Furious”, after failing last-minute negotiations.

“We would prefer that the attorney general and the president (Barack Obama) work with us to get to the bottom of this serious matter,” said House Speaker John Boehner told reporters, referring to the illegal transfer of more than two thousand firearms to Mexico.

A group of negotiators from the House of Representatives, Republican majority, and White House officials sought unsuccessfully yesterday an agreement to avoid the vote in plenary, after the president invoked “executive privilege” to shield the documents.

In parallel, the influential National Rifle Association (NRA), with over 4 million members, announced it is the slope of the lawmakers voting in favor and against contempt.

“It’s a matter of great seriousness and the NRA will consider this vote in future evaluations of our candidates,” he said in a letter to its members the Director of Legislative Affairs for the NRA, Chris Cox.

Boehner, asked about the NRA indirect pressures on lawmakers to mark the contempt vote, said that “as far as I’m concerned, they have no role.”

The impending vote in the full House of Representatives following approval last week in the Oversight Committee headed by California Republican Darrell Issa, who has been accused of politicizing the investigation.

For the approval of contempt requires a simple majority of the 435 member House of Representatives, where Republicans have a majority of 242 seats to 191 Democrats and two vacancies.

If approved in the House, which is considered likely in the context of the election year, the case would be turned over to the Attorney for the District of Columbia, headed by Ronald Machen Jr., which reports directly to Holder.

Under U.S. law, the prosecutor must convene a grand jury to determine whether there was a criminal violation in this case of deliberate obstruction of justice in connection with the investigation of “Fast and Furious”.

The potential penalty includes a jail sentence of between one month and less than a year.

Holder accused Republicans of seeking a “conflict” between U.S. Congress and the Executive in connection with the charge of contempt and described the process as “election-year tactic.”

So far, the Department of Justice has delivered seven thousand 600 140 000 pages of which have been reviewed.

But Republicans argue that the Justice Department has not provided the Oversight Committee “or a single page” 12 of the 22 categories of documents requested in the subpoena issued last October.

Among these areas include identification of high officials who dealt with the controversial operation, and the lack of cooperation among federal agencies to share information on possible arrest of suspects.

The subpoena demanded all communications between the office of Holder and sub David Ogden attorneys, Gary Grindler, James Cole, Manny Breuer, Jason Weinstein, Kenneth White, John Keeny and Bruce Swartz.

It also requested information regarding the murder of the agent of the Bureau of Immigration Services and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Mexico, Jaime Zapata, and agent Brian Terry, occurred in 2010.
