I met Bob Welch in 1978 in New Orleans at the newly reopened Sanger Theater. Robert Palmer was the headliner and had hired my steel band trio (US Steel) to accompany his encore, a song called "Every Kind'a People" which was beginning to climb the charts and has a prominant steel drum hook that keyboards of the day just couldn't replicate. Robert had seen us performing in Jackson Square the previous day and booked us for the show on the spot. Although he had his own drummer, Mr. Palmer graciously allowed me to set up and play the tune with his band.

Following the afternoon soundcheck, as if I wasn't already suffering from swollen head syndrome, Bob Welch who was opening the show introduced himself and asked if I'd like to join his trio for the opening set. After checking with Robert for approval and a quick rehearsal turned jam session, I agreed and the sub drummer Bob had brought in from Gulfport, MS was dismissed and I was privilaged to play the entire show. In those days Robert Palmer was virtually unknown (and a bit strange in his taylored suits and Italian shoes), but I considered Fleetwood Mac's former frontman a true star and his song "Ebony Eyes" was a nationwide hit.

I don't recall many of the songs we stumbled though that amazing one night stand, but, I know we opened the show with Bob's "Black Book". We spent quite a while in the dressing room working out the stops and turn-arounds, and everytime I hear it these days I'm reminded of Meg and Jack White's distinctive "White Stripes" sound which became popular almost three decades later. White Stripes fans will have to agree that Bob was ahead of his time.

You can hear the Peter green influence in Black book.

Welch was the guy that kept fleetwood mac from falling apart when Green left.

Rip Bob Welch

Its an injustice that Bob Welch was purposely kept out of the Rock and roll hall of fame.

Everyone before him and after him in the fleetwood mac line up got in.
Ive never been a real fan of fleetwood mac since Peter Green splintered off, but to not give Bob Welch his due is an injustice

Whats always been a quandary to me is how Fleetwood mac became a huge success with Buckingham/Nicks.

I liked the original band much better.

Oh Well

Old Alabama - Brad Paisley

She’d rather wear a pair of cut-off jeans than a fancy evening dress,
And with her windows rolled down and her hair all blown around, she’s a hot southern mess...
She’ll take a beer over white wine and a campfire over candle light,
And when it comes to love, oh her idea of a romantic night...

Is listenin’ to old Alabama, drivin’ through Tennessee...
A little Dixieland Delight at the Right Time of the Night,
And she can’t keep her hands off of me-ee-eee!

And now we’re rollin’ down an old back road,
I got the steering wheel in one hand...
We’ll find a hideaway where she and I can play,
In Mother Nature’s band...

Now we’re listenin’ to old Alabama, parked somewhere in Tennessee...
A little Dixieland Delight and It Feels So Right,
And It’s Love In The First Degree-ee-eee!

Forget about Sinatra or Coltrane, or some ol’ Righteous Brothers song,

And Barry White ain’t gonna work tonight, if you really wanna turn her on;
Play some back home come on music that comes from the heart,
Play something with lots of feeling, ‘cause that’s where music has to start…

Now we’re listenin’ to Old Alabama, and we’re drivin’ through Tennessee,
A little Dixieland Delight and It Feels So Right and its Love in the First Degree...

Yeah’ you know we’re listenin’ to Old Alabama,(old Alabama) drivin’ through Tennessee, (Tennessee)
A little Why Lady Why at The Right Time of The Night
Oh and she can’t keep her hands off of me-ee-eee

Oh, play me some old Alabama,
Oh, play me some old Alabama...
Won’t you play me some old Alabama,
Play me some old Alabama...
Won’t you pla-ee-ay-ay
yeee-haw!!!

I’ve never been a Mick Fleetwood fan, he’s barely a competant drummer and has made his mark hitching his wagon to folks like Greeny and Bob and later Lindsey and Stevie. While he’s lent his name to some great music, his business practices have severed many relationships through the years and there’s no doubt that he blackballed Bob Welch from the R’N’R Hall of Fame. Bob had every right to the increased royalities Fleetwood was pocketing (on top of management fees) and there’s ample evidence that Welch exhausted every option before going into court. Unfortunately, Fleetwood never forgave Bob for exposing him as such a greedy hack and things ended badly. For years, Bob felt the Hall of Fame controversy was due to the breach of contract lawsuit against Fleetwood and John McVie, but by 2003, he had reconnected with Fleetwood and softened his stance saying he believed that he had been snubbed by the Hall by the directors in New York and music industry insiders who did not like his style of music. However, he did emphisize that the lawsuit was a factor in his being blackballed, as it prevented him from getting in touch with Mick Fleetwood, whom he was not talking to at the time of the induction, and who may have otherwise have used his influence to get Welch included with other members of the band. Whatever the circumstances, Fleetwood solely bears the responsibility in my opinion.
