I think poor Lizzie realizes she is in a trap and is desperately working towards a revelation that will clear it all up. She knows she committed preference fraud and therefore must stick with the position that she truly believed the family lore. Obviously it must be in print somewhere thus she has to stick with the whole story. Sooner or later she will deem that the preponderance of evidence makes it safe for her to have an epiphany and apologize for being duped. That’s her only way out but she is playing it poorly.

I was looking at this marriage certificate and noticed that one of the two witnesses is Mrs. Babcock. I grew up as a preacher’s kid. People would sometimes come and want Dad to marry him, and he performed some of those marriages. Mom would serve as a witness, and he would usually call a neighbor.
In a 1931 (23 Sep) Dallas Morning News I found a picture of an Alyne Geren, an Oklahoma girl from Holdenville, who is in a 4-H club and aiding in judging cattle. She looks like she would be about the same age as Pauline, and maybe a friend.
Analysis? It could have been a private “elopment” in that they got married quietly and without parents present.
