This issue was picked very carefully. Newt and Rick were placed into a no win situation. Say nothing, and lose the religious vote. Stand with their faith, and lose the female vote. No matter what Rome says, most Catholic women use chemical birth control. Human nature being what it is, everyone wants something for nothing.

You are absolutely right. There is no leadership in our so=called conservative republicans. Everytime the Republicans have a majority, a bunch of “conservative” democrats switch over to republican. Now we have a non-conservative republican group in dc. RINOs who vote with the democrat party.

Good points except these people don't care about profit. The mission is too important to be bothered with such trivial concerns. I give you all of the failing "major" print media, and I doubt ABCBSNBC make any money off of the "evening news". All of them think their work should be funded however that happens. Marxist Dems politicians think the same of their commy policies. So they are soul mates.

There appears to be the supposition that all Catholic women adhere to the Catholic tradition.
Who knows and I could care less IF Rick Santorum and his wife practiced Catholic tradition... But Rick has what is it 7 children? Now I personally know Catholic women who do not practice Catholic tradition and they go to church more than one time a week, and some are what would be considered 'devoted' Catholics in the traditional sense. Somewhere along the way UNIVERSAL healthcare became Catholic mantra, at least out of the mouths of the priests I have heard describe their doctrine.
Just like Occupy Wall Street was put into motion to politically deal with Mitt Romney representing that 'evil' 1%.
Like it or not large numbers of the Catholic church are liberal voting democrats. And a large number of them view the Church tradition on contraception as out of date and out of touch.
I suspect the objective was to divert attention but yet to draw attention given how many in the Catholic church support and demand 'UNIVERSAL' health care.... of Teddy Kennedy's life work. So the 'church' is going to have to rethink their demand of 'UNIVERSAL' health care if they intend to maintain their contraception tradition.

Why the Catholic church thought it had to get behind that process is a real good question.
They supported that in Europe and that's a big mess now. Children are starving in the streets in Greece, their parents having abandoned them because they have no income. There's still universal health care there ~ if you really want it ~ and how long will that last.
I took a Sociology course, of all things, back in ‘76 before I dropped out of college. Took another one later on in the early 80’s because I had to but I recall a few points that come to mind now.
One is Maslow’s “ Hierarchy of Needs”, sort of a pyramid affair that started with food, shelter, etc, at the top and worked it’s way down to society and government.
The second thing I recall is the social group overlapping circle thing...
Conservatives, (and all our attendant subsets) and our Laplander Libertarian neighbors to the north, have much in common; but in times of plenty we have much to argue about.
But, when our top-of-the-pyramid needs are threatened, we can overlook those little heresies we fume over constantly otherwise.
That’s why I hang out here at FR, rather than an Evangelical site. I can’t yet give up hope for this Republic as an American.
If Conservative politicians and influencers connect these overlapping issues at the concentric navel of the United States they will discover a powerful vortex not yet ready to accept defeat.
That is why this is a 'war' within the Catholic church... UNIVERSAL health care with the expectation by some to split off 'birth control' as a religious right. And the liberals have no interest in splitting the baby because UNIVERSAL means what it has always meant.
That's the big "if" I wish I knew how we could help bring about. I haven't given up either or I wouldn't bother to post.

We all wish good health for are citizens, but I for one am not willing to purchase health insurance for every citizen with our collective tax confiscations. The federal government has no business, here, period- save perhaps epidemiology as a national security issue...
The 1st Amendment part is just another cut in the overstepping that happens to rile the Catholics and Evangelicals. The Social Gospel meets Goliath. The Constitutionalists and Fiscal Conservatives have already formed a larger perimeter.

You can’t fight a purely secular battle spiritually, nor can you defeat a spiritual enemy by secular tactics.
Once again, that’s why I find FR quite cutting edge.

I agree with you, it looks as though he was set up but, I do think he could have handled the situation better - by not turning the question around on the audience - “If two men can marry, What about three men?” he has done the same before by likening homosexuality to incest. If he is going to be a nominee he must have better answers. This comes off as a weakness that should be his strong suit.
The 2 to 3 argument comes off better if you ask them “Why are you people all bigoted in favor of just 2 people”, and let them tell you. I’ve found most leftwingtards have a difficult time thinking outside of pair-bonding! It’s probably genetic.
