Newscaster George Putnam once said that he knew something was wrong when he asked an adolescent the name of the first president—and the reply was, “was it Jefferson?” Years later, he told of hearing from young people that Dwight Eisenhower was president during the seventeenth century.
A few years ago, Sean Hannity sent out his girl reporter to do a man-in-the-street quiz as to what we celebrate on July 4. No one came even close to getting the right answer. The quiz was apparently conducted live and not edited. At the end, the reporter herself admitted that she really didn't know what the holiday was about and took a guess that it was to celebrate the conclusion of WWI.
They should get credit if they answered "Stephen Foster's birthday" or "Calvin Coolidge's birthday."
