What is the distance you are shooting?

1000 yards, at 100 yard zero, mv of 2600 fps, 168 g hpbt will drop approximately 35 feet, hence need to click up approximately 43 clicks @ 1/2 min per click (open sights)to get on paper.

With a 1000 yard zero, the bullet is highest at approximately 600 yards, at about 145 inches (12 feet +)

To describe an arc with a 200 ft high point, you would need some serious elevation hold, or a blunt tip bullet that bleeds off velocity rapidly, which then would make the second leg of the arc more difficult to stretch.

maybe a large chunk of lead with a blunt tip would do that, I don't know, but when talking trajectories in inches, 200 feet is 2400 inches.

Then again, 1500 yard and beyond, the high point would increase. 2400 inches does seem high.

I think my Marlin 1895ss can handle up to 500 grains, it’s a carbine however, 18.5 barrel length,so not so long range, I would love to try a larger grain, had to get a vest because of the massive bruise I got after 20 rnds.

If the weapon was a flintlock, I wonder if he thought it was unloaded and was flashing the pan for some reason. That could explain why he wouldn’t be aware of the muzzle direction - though it doesn’t excuse it.

Hahahahahahh on the vest. I use a PAST shoulder pad because the first time I shot the rifle the right side of my body went numb and the the next morning I couldn’t decide whether the bruise on my shoulder was just a bruise or massive internal bleeding.

But it has worked out well for me. I have found that the .45-70 enforces good shooting technique or you’re going to hurt.

I’m looking at a new PAST pad....I don’t remember the name of it but it is something like Super Magnun Plus Ultra Turbo Double X-Treme shoulder pad. About an inch thick.

I have always wondered how well the vests work. Do they work well for you? The seem a bit thin to me.

Not bad actually, I used the factory padding and you’re right seems thin. Worked good though, no bruising and you can also add to it if you want, cool vest and pretty cheap. I won’t shoot 45-70 without one ever again. Merry Christmas to you!

I am trying to get a pad that will allow me to shoot a hundred rounds or so. The one I currently have will go 50 rounds but then starts to hurt. I hope to go with the big PAST pad and if I have to will put the small one on top but I doubt that it wll be needed.

I hope you had a Merry Christmas. Mine was extraordinary, I spent it on a trout stream fishing for broun trout. Trying to remember how to fly fish and how to tie knots. First time in over a decade I have taken the time to fly fish.

It was a great Christmas.

Good for you, one good thing about the vest is lots of pockets.

Sorry to take so long to reply, but I reran the ballistic analysis on a long distance calculator and the numbers are correct for a 535 grain postel bullet at 950 FPS. Apogee is 200 feet, 4 and 1.3 inches.

No sweat on the delay!

At that height, what is the elevation hold or dial in you are angling the barrel, and what is the distance of travel?

It just seems a slug would need a lot of distance to get that high, unless it was aimed like howitzer, which then would affect the linear distance of travel.

All bullets drop with the same acceleration (9.8m/s^2).

Nonsense. Muzzle loaders were built long before 9.8m/s^2 was the standard and only fell at about 32ft/s^2.
