So what about the kid brought over at 2 years old who knows nothing else but America and is now a productive adult member of society?

Unfortunately, the illegal alien child has to deal with the consquences of their parents actions just like US born children do.

I don't agree with imposing that consequence. Their parents are a priori scum. That's enough to deal with. If they have kept their nose clean and been productive despite that, those are people we want here. Producers.

it also comes down to personal responsibility. Punishing them for what their parents did without their knowledge or consent is collective punishment. If - and only if - they have proven themselves as indiviuals, then they should be rewarded with being allowed to keep their lives here.

I completely agree. But the Republicans would never nominate anyone who felt the way you and I do. They’re too afraid of losing the Hispanic vote, too afraid of the “R” word. Who have they nominated recently? George W. Bush, who earned the nickname “Jorge Arbusto.” McCain, who earned the nickname “McAmnesty.” Next it will probably be Gingrich, who thinks the longer an illegal alien has lived here, stealing from the U.S., the more he deserves to stay.

It couldn’t be more clear. The Republican Party will not nominate anyone who will really do anything about illegal immigration.

Another critical issue is to punish the enablers:

1) Federal criminal charges against local/state officials flouting federal immigration laws (i.e. sanctuary cities, in-state tuition for illegals, etc)

2) Stiff penalties for willing/lax employers of illegals: cuffed perp walks, fines, and ultimately jail time for repeat offenders.

Punishing them for what their parents did without their knowledge or consent is collective punishment.

Bank robbers, rapists, murderers and other lawbreakers, who happen to be parents, usually also commit their crimes without their children's knowledge or consent. Yet they are still separated from their children.

Besides, what's so cruel and horrible about making an illegal alien's children go back to the old country with him? As another Freeper once pointed out, when a member of the U.S. military is transferred from one location to another, his or her children have to move, also. This is often traumatic, as the children are torn from their school and their friends. The children didn't ask for their parent to go into the military. Yet nobody feels sorry for them.

I think a lot of people would make the point that illegal immigration isn’t as bad as rape or bank robbery. Crossing the border illegally isn’t as bad as those other crimes. However, the real problem is the magnitude. We have a 20 million person strong subculture that has nothing but contempt for our laws and their children no matter how long they have been here are loyal to their parents.

Re-read my first post. I’m talking only about adults who were brought here as kids without their knowledge or consent. If minors, then yes, they go back with the parents.

If they are productive adults who had no idea or clue or choice in being brought here as little kids, then deporting them would be the height of “zero tolerance” unthinking group punishment. Not to mention stupid from a societal perspective: we NEED more non-criminal non-leech members in our society.

As for the parents? GONE.

Michele Bachmann supports deporting them. Newt Gingrich wants to give them legal status.

“I think a lot of people would make the point that illegal immigration isn’t as bad as rape or bank robbery. “

It depends on how much the bank robber got. How much is a free education for 12 years, free medical care, food etc. for four kids?

What about the getaway car driver who says he didn’t know the other guy was in the bank. They both get prosecuted, regardless.

How is an illegal alien adult, who was brought here as a child, productive? It is against the law to work here, remember. So exactly how are they productive ?

If a lot of Americans break the law, can we claim its really not that bad of a law? Aren’t we all subjected to laws because a few bad apples cheat the system? So why do illegal aliens get a break on blanket punishment?
