I should have made that clear.
In 1947 Israel appointed a “Constituent Assembly” that produced several drafts of a Constitution.
That was my reference point.
I have been of the opinion that Lord Balfour (sp), the British appointed governor of the area, coined the term Palestinian when directed to determine the borders of a Palestinian mandate. This was to be a homeland for the Jews whom Balfour referred to as Palestinians. The mandate, as determined by Lord Balfour, included all of Jordan, a part of Saudi Arabia and Syria, the southern third of Lebanon and all of Gaza.
Lord Balfour hated Jews and viewed the mandate as a solution to the “Jewish problem”. He considered the area as a barren desert incapable of supporting the worlds Jewish population and with the Jews forced to move there, most of them would die of starvation thereby eliminating the problem.
The Jews thrived despite Balfour’s expectations and the expectations of their Arab neighbors. Israel should demand the borders of the Palestinian mandate be the borders of Israel.
From the article:
And it was the British, not the Arabs, who reinstated that term, borrowing it from earlier conquerors, the Romans, who had taken the name from Israel's ancient enemies, the Philistines, who were not Arab, but of Greek origin.
You just haven’t been listening
The British had begun referring to the Jews living in the region as Palestinians, but as another FReeper pointed out earlier, it was Arafat who brought it to prominence when referring to the Arabs from the West Bank and Gaza.
To you? Waste of time. Do your own homework.
Re read post #1 it tells you.
Great, and we wonder how we get the crappy candidates we do.
In the article, it mentions that the Brits named the locals “Palestinians”, but it was only applied to the Jews. Another FReeper pointed out that Arafat claimed the phrase after the 6-Days War, sometime around 1968.
Jews called themselves Palrstinians before 1948. It was the term used by the Zionist movements in the late 18th Century.
He was in it up to his misbegotten eyeballs...
