It all depends on what you think of ICE. If they are even modestly competent at doing their jobs, they had listening devices recording the sounds of digging and excavation of this tunnel as it was being built, and decided to bust it when they could get some of the perps in the finished or nearly finished product.
If you assume the ICE is corrupt or incompetent, then they were lucky and the Mexicans were quicker to catch on than we were.
Pick 'em.

The day is coming when something very valuable other than humans or drugs comes through a tunnel like that, or maybe via sub.
How many people REALLY think there ever could be a REAL W.O.T. waged by a country that tolerates 5,000 people crossing it’s Southern border on an average night, and 10,000 on a busy night?
EVERY NIGHT.
The concept is completely ridiculous —there is no REAL War on Terror.
SOME day something other than a person or drug load is GOING to come through one of these many tunnels, and the reason is that in spite of exotic budgeting the leadership does not really take the W.O.T. seriously.
It’s not a question of money —it’s a question of political will.

I guess neither country thought to wait until it was being used, and arrest the users.

Are we sure it’s not an escape tunnel for Kalifornians to use to get out of the state?

I’m surprised none of the Perry Girls said something like “This proves a fence is useless”.
For the record - these tunnels are used to smuggle drugs, not people. It is much harder to smuggle large numbers of people, compared to large amounts of drugs (i.e., you can fit $1,000,000 of herb in a van (maybe even a large car), whereas $1,000,000 of people would take half a dozen buses - at the going rate. People would notice.
And what is their alternative? Let drugs AND people flow across the border freely?

Funny how they can dig all these tunnels under the border but can't dig a decent tunnel to anywhere in Massachusetts. Maybe nonunion labor? Mexicans doing the jobs Americans won't do?

For the record - these tunnels are used to smuggle drugs, not people.Actually, when I lived in San Diego, officials were busting tunnels used for human trafficking pretty often.

LOL! I wonder if anyone can estimate the law-order benefit to a wall based on the frequency/expense of tunnels up to now.
To: Paladin2
What with the cleats hanging on hooks, it must be human-powered high speed rail.

then they were lucky and the Mexicans were quicker to catch on than we were.
Our history with foreign combatants and tunnels is pathetic.
Look at what happened in 'Nam. We found out after the war that they had far more tunnels than we thought. For every one we knew of there were dozens more we never discovered... and they were far more involved than we thought.
Hospitals, factories, schools, barracks, mess halls, warehouses, etc, etc.
So are there dozens more than the VERY FEW we have found? I bet there are and they are more sophisticated than we think.
Eventually the cartels will be running tours for visitors and tourists.
The liberal MSM will be doing extended news shows about how the poor Mexicans have out foxed the DOJ, ICE, CIA, FBI, etc, etc.
Holder, Biden, and Obama and Moose will be living it well on some Caribbean island. All on our dime for far more than they deserve.

The number of buildings that could conceal a tunnel on the US side of the border in San Diego is very limited. Just look at google earth. ICE/BP should be on a first name basis with every owner and tenant of these buildings and shouldn’t have to wait for search warrants and observers to report activities. Any legit business owner should be more than willing to allow access at any time.

whereas $1,000,000 of people would take half a dozen buses - at the going rate. My cousin is married to someone who was into human trafficking in California. He got $10,000 a pop. It was mostly pregnant women he was bringing in. I don't know if that price included false id's and SS numbers. He was also into that.
