Perhaps, perhaps not — How quickly would people turn in their guns for food if, say, the food supply ‘suddenly stopped’*?
* Ironically, the federal government would have a LOT more ‘standing’ to claim “interstate commerce” authority in such an instance; and to do so would ignite such a push back on it that, if America chose to keep the Constitution, the commerce clause would likely be repealed.
Actually, this is where their hubris shows; they think that because all of the military they know, the top-brass "perfumed-princes" (as Hackworth would call them), are all part of their political/elite clique that all of the military has similar stances {and those that don't are mere grunts who have to do whatever their betters tell them!}...
but they miss one important thing here: those very grunts are oathbound to the Constitution, not to their officers, should the officers disobey the Constitution.
But, who knows, maybe the institutionalized political correctness in the military has rendered all the "heads" thereof corrupt.
Good point about Hamilton and the other view on the Bill of Rights. That should be brought up more often. For all of the talk about whether the Second Amendment protects an Individual (yes) or a worthless Collective right (no), even w/o it Congress would still have no legitimate authority to ban gun ownership.
