I remember this old jackass always being an big mouthed “activist” but he was never a comic. Not a funny one anyway.

I always felt so bad for Janis Joplin- she was voted the ugliest guy on campus in her college years.

That’s gotta affect you

I love her music

It was dubbed a "rally and prayer vigil" for embattled Jasper Police Chief Rodney Pearson, but instead, the church event was filled with derogatory remarks about white people by the guest speaker.

A capacity crowd gathered for the event on Tuesday evening at Faith Temple Church of God in Christ on Pollard Street in Jasper, where Ray Lewis is pastor.

The special speaker for the evening, 80-year-old actor and speaker Dick Gregory, had earlier laid a wreath at the grave of James Byrd, Jr.

The event began with Lewis instructing reporters to leave the sanctuary with all recording devices, including video and still cameras. News reporters and video crews from as far away as Houston gathered their equipment and filed out of the building.

Christine Dobbyn, a reporter from KTRK Channel 13 in Houston, showed KJAS News a press release that KTRK had received which invited them and other media to the event. Dobbyn said "It makes no sense, they invited us here, they begged us to come, and then they kicked us out".

Most reporters stayed outside, while a few gathered in the foyer of the church and listened to Dick Gregory's comments via a ceiling mounted speaker.

During his comments, Gregory bashed white people, while using the "n" word countless times when referring to black people.

Pastor Ray Lewis, who has been very outspoken against racism, never objected or stopped Gregory's comments.

Gregory called all white people in Jasper "stupid", when referring to a recall effort that is currently underway to remove three city council members.

Two city council members, Terrya Norsworthy and Alton Scott, were in the church. However, reporters did not see Councilmen Willie Lee Land, Tommy Adams, or Randy Sayers. The City of Jasper had posted an official notice on Friday that said there would be a quorum (three or more council members) at the event.

Gregory also said that white people in Jasper are not "real white folk", he said white people in Jasper are "just mad because they can't get out of Jasper".

Gregory also made reference to the Pope, saying "The Pope is the most powerful man in the world. Do you think he would want to live in Jasper?".

Following the event, Gregory held a short press conference, but by that time only three reporters remained at the church.

Gregory spoke out on the planned execution of Lawrence Russell Brewer for his part in the 1998 murder of James Byrd, Jr., which is scheduled for Wednesday evening in Huntsville. Gregory said he is against the death penalty, and he said that the three killers - Lawrence Russell Brewer, John King, and Shawn Berry - should all serve life sentences

I hope that those of us who remember the ‘60s will stand against this second round.

“What’s going to really tip it off, is a cop is going to make a mistake,...”

I suspect that’s what many in this crowd are hoping for - a “Kent State moment”.

They don’t care whether it’s by accident or by their own provocation. Dead and injured protestors are the fuel to the fire.

Exactly. A sting of firecrackers set off during the protest resulted in the shootings at Kent State.
