The way I understood it, it was Paul of Tarsus who spearheaded the separation of Christianity from Judaism, in order to get more converts.

I think we have to let Islamic prisoners eat halal, and Jewish prisoners keep kosher, and Catholics take communion. If we believe in religious freedom and consider Islam a valid religion, we have to let it be practiced....in ways that don’t harm others.

The general prohibition is flat stupid, though....
