The primary purpose for those checks is not to see if you are outright shoplifting, but to see if you and the cashier are working together to "miss" a few items or to misscan them as far cheaper items. Far more is stolen by employees than by shoplifters.
I confused the hell out of one of those people at Sam's club. I bought 4 tires, 4 installation packages and 4 road hazard warranties for 12 items on the receipt, but only had four tires in the cart (the installation bays were not connected inside the store, so you had to haul the tires around the building). He had a hard time figuring out how 12 items matched with 4 tires.

Considering the clientele and location of some of these Walmarts, I would feel more comfortable with off duty solders with machine guns manning the doors and parking lots.
