Just before. The SB didn't exist yet. It was in the early 60s. I was in high school. I lived in Cleveland then and had a chance to go to the NFL championship in 1964 but they wanted $35 for the ticket for my season seat so I stayed home. It was blacked-out on TV but just as the game started, the signal from a Canadian station brought the game in very clearly. When the game ended, we lost the picture.
Cleveland beat Johnny Unitas and the Colts 27-0. Quarterback was Frank Ryan, fullback Jim Brown, receivers Gary Collins and Paul Warfield. Collins caught three TD passes and Lou Groza kicked two field goals.
That was the last year I ever bought a ticket to a pro football game. I saw one game since because my BIL was given some tickets. I went out on a high note. I have been to two MLB games since then and no NBA games.
Nice sentiment there, Spin. I hope Brady puts 600yds on the Squealers. Your ownership are 0bummer ballwashers and your QB a rapist. Nice team. Go Squealers... straight to Hell.
Pretty cool. You’ve either got a great memory or you looked it up. LOL!
Paul Warfield? Who’d he play for later, the Dolphins?
No, I remembered all those details correctly (but I DID check them just to be sure). I was a 16-year-old sports fanatic kid who lived through a very tense season and went to all the home games. A lot of the details, especially the championship game were seared, I tell you, seared into my memory. No one thought the Browns would shut down Unitas and the Colts.
One game that sticks in my head is a 33-33 tie with the St. Louis Cardinals. No overtime back then. We ended the year edging the Cardinals out for first place.
Warfield did play for the Dolphins and did great with them.
I remember Johnny Unitas. He played in hightop cleats, didn’t he? The Colts were a powerhouse. I have no recollection of the Browns doing so well then, but I wasn’t paying a lot of attention to the NFL then.
Ur of the Chaldeans was a city in Mesopotamia (modern Iraq). So he’s worried about “tazing” Iraqi donkeys.
