That is not the attitude behind the wall protecting Israelis, nor the wall proposed here.

I know, I know...it could never happen here, could it?

Doesn't the government already have laws preventing people from taking their own property in the form of cash out of the country if it exceeds what the goverment deems to be too much?

Electric fence won’t work in the Rio Grande.

No one’s even proposed spending that kind of money. And it wouldn’t be good for farmers, cattle, or kids. Texans live and work there.

In order to control the 1200 mile border in Texas, ranch-destroying fence or not,you need to patrol the border.

Do not have the time right now to look for links but a sector of the Yuma AZ area is using some high tech ideas for border control and it seems to be working.

Why are you determined to have a fence that requires taking farm and ranch land out of production? Put “boots on the ground” and spare the ranchland.

Oops, those boots will be on farm and ranch land.

Citizens in mexico have arrest powers concerning illegals.

OTOH, we are ordered by the courts to give illegals our life savings and land if we so much as look at them funny.

The governor said he didn’t like adding liability to the local Sheriff’s and police departments if they failed to properly ID someone.

The fence along the border south of san diego works just fine.

'Just fine' is a gross understatement.

Today, Henry is assistant chief of the Border Patrol's San Diego sector. He says apprehensions here are down 95 percent, from 100,000 a year to 5,000 a year, largely because the single strand of cable marking the border was replaced by double — and in some places, triple — fencing.

"Here in San Diego, we have proven that the border infrastructure system does indeed work," Henry says. "It is highly effective."

Did you change your mind because of Perry’s position, or never liked the idea of a fence?

My position has always been that in order to reduce illegal immigration, we must eliminate the incentives they have to immigrate here. That means no welfare, healthcare or jobs. Make America inhospitable to illegals and they'll stay home. Make America the "Promised Land" to illegals and no fence will keep them out.

A fence is nothing more than a knee-jerk "feel good" plan. Looks good on a bumper sticker but is of no real use. And, yes, Governor Perry will likely pay for his candor on this subject.

Sheriff Joe reported that Perry called him and they had a long talk on immigration.

I’m very curious to see what comes from that conversation.

Fences are effective in keeping people in, too, aren’t they?

It's a good thing they do so you and your family can sleep better at night.

New France ended up in the hands of the Brits. They still have it. They also have a chunk of New Spain ~ they call it British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan ~ and Yukon ~ but they may actually have belonged to Russia only they didn't know it.

The United States did a sea to sea thing, a good deal of that aided by Spaniards who didn't care for Spanish rule and certainly not rule by the Grandees in Mexico and other former Spanish provinces/colonies.

It's kind a fun digging into Spanish history in North America ~ for a great deal of the time there were few Spaniards and few places. They spent a lot of time figuring out trade routes and trying to find gold. They also figured out how to turn Indian corn into good whiskey.

Plus the smoked hams and other meats ~ they modified the traditional Indian methods, improved the technology, and made sure that in the future when someone visited America there'd be plenty of good stuff to eat besides dog and the Three Sisters (beans, squash and corn).

The French didn't pack up and leave. Real Frenchmen fled to Vincinnes and the Green River Valley after the Britsh defeated the White Coats in Canada.

Their descendants are still around BTW. About 30 million of them!

Check fence, its not one layer but multiple layers. Its cheap, if India can afford, US should have no problem. Only will is required.

He will pay for it in the primary. Don’t get to worked up by Perry’s stripper numbers, likely not to hold up, it’s very early. If he wins the nomination I will vote for him.

Absolutely. Not only that, but it's a hideous waste of taxpayers' money, a dear resource that is in very short supply these days.

A point to consider: Israel - for much better reasons than have ever been elucidated for a wall between the US and Mexico - built a wall around the Gaza Strip, including a metal and concrete barrier between Egypt and the Gaza Strip. Nonetheless there are numerous smuggling tunnels that pass under that barrier that Israel has never been able to completely close up.

If the Israelis cannot seal their border against smugglers with a concrete and steel barrier, what makes anyone other than a delusional fool think that the US can seal its border with Mexico against smugglers and illegals seeking to enter the US?

Its inevitable some sort of amnesty will have to be worked out.

But CLEARLY, Perry is OUT OF HIS MIND if he thinks either he can get nominated or any resolution of the problem with illegal invaders here can be worked out WITHOUT militarizing our southern border.
