Well, aside from the fact that Conan Doyle wrote only four S.H. novellas (not novels by any definition), this person is certainly the person I'd choose to censor Conan Doyle's works. DIRHTIT/sarc?

Just btw, the four novellas are: A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of Four, The Hound of the Baskervilles and The Valley of Fear. Valley of Fear **almost** made it to full novel status, being easily the longest of the four.

I just don't like how they've tried to update A Study in Scarlet to make it more topical. Now the story has Dr. Watson being injured near Kandahar during the war in Afghanistan. < /joke>

I assume you're talking about the recent Masterpiece Theatre Sherlock Holmes. I enjoyed several episodes. Of course, there is a precedent for updating Sherlock. Basil Rathbone’s series took place during WWII. Many film buffs adore those movies.

That's the one. I just got a kick from my friend ranting about moving where Watson had been injured when he didn't realize that was the one thing that wasn't updated to be updated after 130 years. I did laugh at Holmes' updated addiction to nicotine patches (hidden to avoid spoilers).

Certainly some of the discussion gives that impression. No library, no bookstore, no free online texts ... no unassigned reading at all.
