Probably not a stalling tactic.
Usually closer to trial when they pull that trick.
More likely disagreements between client and defense team. Happens quite often when the defendant is a lawyer himself, even if he's never tried a criminal case. We had one lawyer here in town (now gone to his reward) who was constantly in trouble but could not keep a lawyer. He wound up representing himself and losing badly.
A word to the wise, John: shut up and let your lawyers do their job. A lawyer who represents himself has a fool for a client.

"Craig has served as White House counsel under President Barack Obama.
He led the team that President Clinton assembled to defend him during impeachment hearings in 1998 and was a member of Clinton's trial team in the U.S. Senate."
