Yes, I firmly believe that if either the Japanese OR the Germans had been able to finish their nuclear studies and created the bomb, that they would’ve used it on some major US city on either coast.

As to Hirohito, he was involved in the war planning and overall strategy up to his neck and should’ve been strung up by it. However; MacArthur knew the oriential mind much better than some historians are giving him credit for. 2 points come to mind: if Hirohito, God-on-earth ruler to the Japanese, had been hung as a war criminal, we’d most likely still be fighting the Japanese. Also, making Hirohito come to him to begin the road back from war worked quite well for Mac. It forced the Japanese to swallow their pride and accept defeat/post-war occupation and of course, it boosted Mac’s ego no end.

I would bet that your Flying-Tiger Father had some wonderful stories about his adventures, (good and bad!) during the war. They knew early on how tough the Japanese could be as an opponent!

Nagasaki Day tomorrow. I’m going to put a notice on my PDA so I won’t forget to post a celebratory thread.

Anyone who posts links to the so-called "Institute For Historical Review" is anti-Semite scum, by definition.

What I find interesting is the attempt to link claims that the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were war crimes to the views of people like Eisenhower and LeMay who believed that they were strategic errors of no criminal consequence.

Then there is the leap to the claim that all "conservatives" believed these were "war crimes" until the 1980s when the "neocons" (an IHR/FR derogatory codeword for American patriots of Jewish heritage) decided they weren't.

The fact is that no mainstream conservative hated America and America's armed forces enough to claim that they were war crimes.

That claim was invented by fringe cranks at the time, was adopted by mainstream leftists in the 1960s and then adopted again by fringe anti-Semite cranks in the 1980s.

There’s a misunderstanding here. Someone asked for a link. The one I’d saved from 2004 is gone. So I tried to find something similar and the IHR thing popped up. I posted the link with some caveat about not knowing if it was legit. The mod removed that post and one other. I guess I was breaking a rule or something.

Anyway, as far as I know, that was the first time I’ve heard of that site, even though I see why you’d think I was running around quoting them.

BTW - I don’t think anyone tossed around the term “war crime”. Most of the quotes I saw were coming from the position that the war was already won. Like you, I always thought that was revisionism.
