That just goes back to the fact that democracies, and to some extent even representative republics (indirect democracies) are so easy to demagogue, to bully and wheedle around by tiny but white-hot interest groups. The men you quote were masters of that.
I stand by the statement that a fair poll of US citizens’ personal wishes of government policies would reflect a position well right of where the government is now. I am not calling for a government based on such polls, at least where participation in such a poll would be voluntary. If everyone had to answer the poll, it would be far harder to demagogue.
