Why would a strong conservative like Texas Governor Rick Perry drag establishment GOP Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney along for the ride?

Rick Perry served in the U.S. Air Force after graduating from Texas A&M. He considered a
career as a pilot for Southwest Airlines but decided to return to his family's farm in Haskell
County, where he launched his political career as a Democrat. Perry switched to the GOP
while in the Texas House, before running for agriculture commissioner.
