How likely is it that a team of scientists would get together to engineer a deadly bacteria that can only be spread from feces to food contact?

Think about it. Don't overthink it.

Why wouldn't they engineer a deadly bacteria that is spread more easily?

“DAMN, our brilliant plot and millions in costs was defeated when people started washing their vegetables more thoroughly..... and we would have gotten away with it if it were not for soap and water!!!!!”

Cut down on the tinfoil in your diet.

Possible, but not likely. i’m always suspicious when a bug doesn’t behave like we think it should, but nature sometimes surprises.

E. Coli is closely related to Shigella and has acquired the DNA to produce the Shiga toxin in the 0157:H7 strain. That isn’t new. 0157:H7 has been known to cause hemolytic urinary syndrome just like the new strain.

What is apparently new is the ‘stickiness’ factor that lets lots of bacteria build up, increasing the toxin load. Diarrhea is the body’s defense to this build-up, trying to flush out the bug and its toxins.

http://www.german-way.com/intervw2rn.html ~ just look up SURVEY GERMAN UNDERWEAR CHANGE and you’ll find thousands just like it. This lady, though, is liberal in her estimation citing a report that it’s weekly!

This thing started to happen about the time NATO began to Bomb Libya—I wonder if there is a connection? If Guadaffi did this—France should use Tripoli as a New Nuclear Test Zone. OR Maybe Germany should enter the Fray with a new Afrika Korp. or Maybe Germany should recycle their Nuke Materials into bombs.

As a living and traveling meat locker, the domesticated pig often went along, both overland and by sea, on long trips; and they could eat the garbage you created as you went. Then, eventually, came their time to be slaughtered.

Pigs were brought from Europe to the Americas for that reason, as well as for starting new colonies. They may have went along for that same reason - food - on return voyages; with some surviving the journey and joining their cousins in Europe.

“why do I have that nagging feeling there was intervention by scientists to get this deadly combo.”

You think this has something to do with all the micro-biologists that have committed ‘suicide’ over the past few years?

Matters little that the farm is hydroponic or oganic if human fecal matter was accidentally (or deliberately) introduced into the system. I haven't much experience with hydroponics but some mostly that they didn't work all that well on the crops we tried to grow. Bean sprouts of course would be an exception since they only take a few days to grow until harvested.

Correct me if wrong but in the hydroponic system the solution is recycled until subtantially depleted of its nutrients then replaced. But replacement may not matter much either if the bacteria found a home in the irrigation system even if not as compatible as the human gut.

Then there's still the problem of identifying the original host who's probably a farm laborer who started this bacterial infection.

I’m pretty sure the Spanish ALWAYS carried pigs with them wherever they went. As far as shipping cattle back, may be?

For example, going to the sauna in Germany is a totally different experience than in the USA. When I first met my husband, he had only been in Germany a few months. One weekend I took him to a sauna in Bad Dürkheim, a town whose main income is spa guests. The sauna is located in the basement of a swimming pool right next to the famous Dürkheimer Riesenfaß (giant wine barrel of Dürkheim). We went downstairs with our bathing suits on and when I got downstairs I started taking my suit off to be naked with all the rest of the people. Nothing to it. What I did not notice was that my husband started looking around, never having seen people co-ed all walking around stark naked--like there was nothing more natural in the whole world. He proceeded to take his clothes off to blend in and I never noticed that he was maybe a little bit embarrassed never having done that sort of thing before.

If being naked is so perfectly natural why is she covered up for the interview photo?

Yes, we Americans prefer our womenfolk to be totally nekid in those interview pictures.

Maybe somebody should write her a letter or something ~ find her email ~ just ask!

BTW, way back when we had a special discussion with the Battalion Sergeant Major every week for new arrivals ~ and he would tell you about a couple of important items ~ (1) Fines for public urination ~ payable directly to the officer who catches you, and (2) Don't go to the public swimming pool EVER ~ it didn't have a filtration system nor did they add chlorine. Just kept pumping water in as it spilled out.

Then one day I got on a commuter car that'd just arrived from Turkey (no doubt by mistake).
