'Doomsday Plane' Would Save President and Joint Chiefs in Apocalypse Scenario

Golie was a hoot. We used to pick at him and refer to him as a feather merchant, as he was civil service. I remember one morning coming to work he ran over a big ole swamp rabbit (but didn’t bust him up) and wondered if anyone knew how to skin it.

Being a native North Louisiana Redneck, I skinned and gutted it for him. IIRC, he cooked for supper that night.

Another of the operators was a guy named Jim Kot. He stayed in the Shreveport area after he got out and became a house building contractor. Seems he carpentered part time while he was still enlisted.

Seems one of the NCOIC’s out there was a MSGT named Simons or Simonds.

Personally, I'd rather just be flyin' with a small group of 2 seaters, the best pursuit/fighter I could get. Just jump in behind the pilot, strap in and say "go AF1".

Its purpose is to provide an aerial platform and command center for the US leadership in the event of nuclear war. Dubbed the 'Doomsday Plane' in popular jargon, the aircraft is kept in readiness to carry the President or others in the chain of leadership known as the NCA (National Command Authority), during the initial hours or days of a general conflict. During an attack on US soil, some leaders would be taken to an underground command post in Virginia while others would go aboard the E-4B to direct American Forces.

As I was led to believe it's sole purpose is to make sure the USA is not caught with all it's nuke buttons wiped out - this platform was to ensure the nukes could be launched no matter how many command centers were wiped out on the ground - the ultimate fail safe was the airborne commend center with all the codes (originally stored in glass memory chips that would be wiped out in case of destruction of the NEACP. These codes were originally escorted on and off the plane with armed guards. Hence it's name 'Doomsday Plane'.

Getting too many Generals and and Admirals and defense contractors and politicians in one room sucks all the logic out. If they weren’t so bent on cool flying command centers maybe they could think about basic logic, i.e., points of failure and what the system design goals actually are. If one thinks for a minute, one knows exactly where the command centers need to be.
