In A Broken Dream
~ Python Lee Jackson featuring Rod Stewart ~
Sidenote: Python Lee Jackson was a band that did some sessions with Rod Stewart in 1968 because the band's lead guitarist and singer was a fan of The Jeff Beck Group and felt he couldn't do justice to the song's lyrics. Nothing became of the track until 1970 when this lovely obscurity was released as a single and became a hit in their native Australia.

Bad Liver and A Broken Heart (in Lowell)
~ Tom Waits ~
Sidenote: The master of vagabond story-telling, Tom Waits established himself as the trademarked gravel-voiced boy-blues genius and hobo poet laureate with this cynical and cliché-ridden masterpiece from 1976, filled to the brim with surprising double entendre, alliteration and plays on words. From the opening snatch of "As Time Goes By" to the closing rhyme for "asbestos" (for which he won a bet with Chuck E. Weiss), Waits set the bar so high that he's been accepted as the ultimate 'songwriter's songwriter' by artists as unlikely and diverse as The Rolling Stones, The Eagles, Elvis Costello, Bette Midler, Crystal Gayle, Bruce Springsteen, Rickie Lee Jones, Bono, Miles Davis, Frank Zappa and Henry Rollins to name just a few.
In 2011, Tom was inducted into the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame by Neil Young for an impressive and ambitious body of work spanning 40 years. In his acceptance speech, Tom reduced the luminaries in attendance to sobbing laughter when he noted, "They say I've never had a hit .... and I'm difficult to work with ... like that's a bad thing."

Broken Barricades
~ Procol Harum ~
Sidenote: The Broken Barricades album in 1971 was Robin Trower's last outting with Procol Harum before launching his successful solo career.

Morning Has Broken
~ Cat Stevens ~
Sidenote: I usually avoid posting anything by Yusuf Islam (born Steven Demetre Georgiou and better known as Cat Stevens), but this lovely Christian Hymn with lyrics by Eleanor Farjeon and set to the traditional Gaelic tune Bunessan is hard to resist for irony's sake alone.

Born With A Broken Heart
~ Kenny Wayne Shepherd ~
Sidenote: I'm dedicating this one to FReeper Titan Magroyne, my BFF and the one who introduced me to the music of little Kenny Wayne all those years ago. When she asked what this week's Canteen theme would be before I had considered one, I replied, "I don't know kid, everything's broken". Inspiration is a funny thing, Thanks K. This one's for you - it don't get much better than an SRV-style "3 against 2" shuffle and Noah Hunt crooning lyrics about sad guitars, guns and banging drums, imho. :)
