A example is the Fort McHenry Tunnel, this is a sunken tube tunnel.I'm not sure about how easy that would be with the Hudson. Ocean going ships go to the port of Albany.

I wouldnt go to the last Florida Key island because of that long a$$ bridge. Eh, Seven Mile Bridge is far from the last bridge. There are many small islands and short bridges before one gets to Key West. It's definitely the longest, by miles, though.

Well, I was in Jersey last time I saw it for 97 cents, so it is cheaper there. But, yeah, the first time it hit $3.50/gallon, I started walking to get the bagels on Saturday mornings (about a mile or so round trip, no biggie) and didn’t drive so much. Now, I’m still walking more, but driving, too.

It’s like getting the Peace Bridge replaced.
Like that will ever happen, too.

The Tappan Zee Is Falling Down - Why is New York taking so long to replace a vital bridge? Municipal "workers" and other welfare cheats.

I've been gone from Buffalo for >40 years.
Life was good for kids east of Buffalo in the 50's/early 60's though.

Yes, West Point is about 1/2 way between Bear Mountain Bridge and Harriman bridge. Palisades to Rt 6 will get you to 17 and up to Monroe on the otherside of I-87 as you head in the direction of Swan Lake and Middletown.
If TZ goes out and I have to get to NJ from where I am in Western CT, I'll probably see more traffic on I-84 and Palisades. You're right, a pretty drive either way.

We recently had a highway project killed by the EPA. It has been in the planning stages (and costing money) since the 1970s.
Environmentalists suck.

The tunnel is well below the bottom of the river, some of the East River subway tunnels are sunken tubes, built from the early 1900's thru the 1970's. As for ships, the Port of Baltimore is much busier than Albany and there are no problems.
As for constructability, the tunnels are buoyant, they “float” in the river mud, which is about 400 feet deep in the center of the Hudson at that point.

The USA can’t seem to build anything under budget and on schedule. Not just big bridges but defense items too. Too much political corruption and interference. It is always about finding the right cronies and getting contributors involved and making profits. Corruption it at the heart of the problem. Remember the “big dig” in Boston that went on for a decade or longer sucking on taxpayers while contractors and crooked pols got rich.
Something is lacking in our culture that we once had and the lack of plain old ethics is a big part.
