“TSD initiated a program for covert testing of materials on unwitting U.S. citizens in 1955.”

This was not intelligence gathering activity directed at US citizens, which was illegal, but was unethical “methods” research to find ways to use LSD and other substances to use to interrogate of disable enemies of the USA. Of course the enemies of the US were doing the same thing.

This program had nothing to do with SADO or the East-West Center.

“Of course, you have to be able to admit that the CIA was involved in the overthrow of Sukarno and the mess in Vietnam. Apparently, some refuse to admit it.”

Usually it is the ACLU, Marxists, fellow-travelers of the vast left-wing conspiracy to undermine America who bash the CIA.

I personally support all of the CIA efforts during the Cold War to fight Communists and I believe the US presidents and the CIA believed that these programs were within the War Powers of the US president.

That includes the wipe-out of the Communists in Indonesia (which happened before SADO arrived) and the Phoenix program in Vietnam (nothing to do with SADO) to take out Communist infrastructure which was engaged in its own assassination program against the South Vietnamese who didn't want to be Communist.

The Cold War, behind the scenes, was dirty, nasty affair and the Domino Theory was true, IMO, and saving Vietnam was key to saving Indonesia and its incredible wealth in oil, gold, rubber and strategic minerals.

While there were excesses, I support the FBI COINTELPRO and the CIA CHAOS programs and all of the Family Jewels programs which traitors, IMO, revealed to the US media in the NY Times. I support all of the programs that you are denouncing. Ayers got off the hook because of the exposure of the CHAOS programs against Soviet KGB infiltration of the anti-Vietnam War moment (remember that Dohrn went to Cuba to get FGB training). America's ability to defend against foreign terrorist was grievously harmed by the elimination of the CHAOS and COINTELPRO programs, IMO.

If the East-West Center in Hawaii was used at anytime to recruit and train foreign nationals to fight Communism I sure as heck support that, but see no evidence of it prior to 1967.

Again, from my personal experience, SADO would never have been recruited by the CIA organization that vetted me, IMO.

Why did all of these important scholars and ideologues, fundraiser and networkers, these millionaires and billionaires – especially from the Arab and Islamic world, and extreme socialist and communist party activists — reach out to help this unknown, undereducated young man, many before Obama was anybody of known importance?

In this fascinating thread, that is one GREAT question, GOPJ.
