Storm Causes Power Outages Across Southland
March 20, 2011 5:00 PM
LOS ANGELES (CBS) High winds and rain knocked out power to more than 46,000 Southland homes and businesses Sunday, according to utility officials.
The storm-related outages affected about 10,000 Los Angeles Department of Water and Power customers Sunday afternoon, DWP representative MaryAnne Pierson said.
Southern California Edison reported that 36,448 customers without power, according to Vanessa McGrady of SCE.
Most of the DWP outages were wind and rain related, including downed wires and tree branches getting tangled in wires, Pierson said.
More of the outages are in the valley areas than in the central areas, she said. We have extra crews, about 38 crews, out repairing things due to the weather.
Pierson said there were outages in West Los Angeles, the Hollywood Hills, Sherman Oaks, Century City, Chatsworth, West Hills and Sylmar.
In SCEs service area, the hardest hit included Garden Grove with 4,308 customers out, Palmdale with 3,421 customers out, Whittier with 1,510 customers out, Hawthorne with 777 customers out, and Lynwood with 263 customers out, McGrady said.

L.A. Marathon: Thousands evaluated for hypothermia
March 20, 2011 | 4:58 pm
Thousands of runners at the Los Angeles Marathon have been evaluated for hypothermia and 25 have been transported to local hospitals, according to Santa Monica fire Capt. Judah Mitchell.
“Most of them sat and recovered on their own,” Mitchell said.
At 4:40 p.m., he said around 70% of runners have completed the 26.2-mile race from Dodger Stadium to Ocean Avenue and California Avenue in Santa Monica. There were 23,542 entrants, 9.6% less than last year. The number of people who showed up to run, though, has not yet been released.
The runners battled torrential rains and shin-deep puddles. About 1.72 inches of rain have fallen in Santa Monica and downtown while two inches of rain have fallen in Beverly Hills.

we have had non stop here in Eagle Rock... since early morning! Pouring and windy right now.
Yikes.. looks like the storm door is open for awhile..
we got about 2 inches here the last 3 days , almost an inch since last night.. and more coming
“...but when it pours, man it pours.”
I recall 14 or 15 years ago a similar storm slammed Ventura. It practically washed away an entire RV park near the mouth of the Ventura River. I remember seeing videos of big RVs and trailers being washed under a bridge and out to sea in a spectacle similar to the Japanese tsunami. Hopefully we won't have a repeat of that.
I can’t handle many days without some sunshine....that is just ugly!
Hasn’t stop raining in L.A. It’s like I was back in Vancouver all over again. The flood “warch” should wash away the illegals.
Damn Norm, what’s a nice guy like you hanging out with this crowd?
It’s been like this for at least 4 weeks! We had a False Spring in late Jan and most of Feb and now I think we are 400% over normal rainfall for March
Not all that much here in Orange County yet. I expect things to pick up later tonight. We are barely over a 1/4” where I am at.
