We on the Texas gulf coast know that when you install a generator elevate it. Think about the highest possible storm surge and go higher. In this case they should have considered the possible tsunami wave height and put the generators to keep the pumps going high in the air. So, there has been a lesson learned so now, as Mike Holmes would say, “do it right”. The problem is simple and can be fixed.
I would like to see an EIS on the amount of mercury left behind during the quake and tsunami in Japan. I am assuming that Japan, in a bid to save money and resources, used the curly bulbs exclusively. If the did, it would seem to me that millions of these bulbs are not a part of the mud covering the portions of the nation. How much mercury, no one can say for sure, but future populations may pay for this a lot higher price than for the nuclear meltdowns.
Why not just build the plant so that the water recycles itself? Keep the cooling water at a place above the reactor, with a “thermostat” allowing for it to return when it reaches a certain temp. You could recycle the same water forever, without pumps.
How you get water to run uphill:)
oh dear....this can only mean that more windmills are on the horizon....
Because you need LOTS of water, and you don’t need a major disaster to be screwed.

What liberals will “learn” from Japan: All nuclear power is evil and we must never build another plant ever.
What conservatives will learn: We should be doing all we can to replace older nuclear plants that may be close to end of life, with far better designs, safer, almost impossible to melt down, pebble-bed reactors.
“Thanks. But I wont hold my breath.”
—Yeah, and even if Obama’s crew doesn’t squash it... there’s always the “Maverick” (and congressional Dems) eager to meddle...
“... I am prepared, once this is over, to make an evaluation as to whether our nuclear power plans can continue,” McCain said.
Because no one ever dies at coal mining operations.
