>> Smells like...
Yeah, the references are lame especially the contradictions regarding the impact of “culture”.

Perhaps a dearth of rap music and rap music videos in Japan would account for it.
What, no Heineken guy wading through the water with a washtub?

You are a fortunate man.
Umm, they have awful music videos and lots if creepy bondage porn.
I think they just have a lot more confidence in their government; somebody like Ray Nagin wouldn’t be elected dogcatcher.
In Japan the police keep a record of households. In the U.S. the police keep a record of a- holes.
well to be fair, there isnt a helluva lot left to loot.its not like the local store is just closed...its now 20km inland mixed in with the contents of a car factory and the local fishing boats..the issue of looting will happen if they dont start to get food, medical supplies and i sure hope it doesnt come to that.
they really need a break, i mean its one problem piling over another at the moment...
I’ve not been, but from everything I’ve seen, just as or even more high-tech.
The Akihabara is legendary among tech shoppers.

‘...of course I know it’s unlikely Japan would beat N. Korea - but just an example...’
I’ve lived in Japan and I’ve traveled in Korea - including the border area. I wouldn’t bet a dime on the Norks in a war vs. Japan.
Japan would KICK the North Korean’s asses, pave them over as a glass parking lot, and be back in time for supper.
So, you think the Japanese still have it in them as warriors.
When I was in Saigon I was wondering the same thing about the Viet Cong. Nowadays, their job is to hang around and protect the embassies, they look 17 or 18 years old, same pea green uniforms and texting and playing games on their cell phones. They are good for giving them the camera to take your picture riding in a cyclo though.
Different generation for sure. But then again look at their neighbors. Thailand. I mean, how much of a warrior do you have to be these days with Thailand as your neighbor and a bunch of ladyboy soldiers coming after you.
Vietnam's main concerns right now anyways is Malaysia (the Islamists) and China. That's what worries them these days.
I am absolutely certain the Japanese still have it in them as warriors, and it has nothing to do with the defections of the North Koreans.
Don’t know jack about the VC, except what my Vietnamese wife tells me - and she’s tough as nails, behind that feminine smile. From what she says, Vietnam’s main concern right now is corrupt party officials, and I can well believe it, having spent time in China (Red) way back when.
Spent plenty of time in Thailand, and wouldn’t judge the Thai army by the existence or nature of katoeys. The Thais can kick major *ss any time they want.
Beautiful!
Many of the people have lost whatever supplies they had. They aren’t looting because they don’t do that.
Law enforcement here is far different than that of Japan.
Two different cultures.
True statement. I spent three years there just outside of Tachikawa.
Yeah, I certainly don’t experience American life like that! Americans might behave badly in an everday situation (like pushing onto a bus before someone else) but when true disasters strike (again, 9/11), they behave with enormous courage and kindness. I’ve seen it up front and personal.
