hmmmmmmmmm...........in relatively recent world history, we all know of lots of fatal rioting in Chicago, Los Angeles, New Orleans and Liberia to name just a few.

But, uh-oh, we can’t talk about the common denominator!

As Andy Taylor used to say on “Mayberry”...........”Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!”

As an example even a year and a half ago, most the airport staff I saw at the Phoenix airport were native born Americans - mostly whites and some hispanics. I was there a month ago and this time I saw mostly Africans. Not African Americans, but Africans speaking in native tongue. They are all new arrivals.
I also saw a restaurant come up near a place I used to frequent, serving ‘East African Cuisine’(whatever that is) and a Halal meat shop next to it. Neither of the two was there before.

Not exactly - it’s more the idea of a homogenous culture - i.e., immigrants assimilating into their new culture. meaning if you emigrate to the US you BECOME AMERICAN.

Which USED to happen in the US.

Because they are different than the people in countries where looting does happen.

That said, Japanese who emigrate to the US assimilate pretty well with us. Most Asians do, Japanese (or possibly Koreans) probably do the best and Chinese the worst, with the others in-between but in general, Asians assimilate well.

“Our diversity is our strength” makes sense in a corporate environment, in a way. Obviously everyone in a corporation can’t be in Sales and Marketing ... have to have engineers, bookkeepers, sales, executives, janitors, maintenance, etc., to make it work.

But from the standpoint of multicultural diversity within one nation, “Our diversity is our strength” is complete double-speak Orwellian bull$hit of the highest order.

More diverse societies almost always have crime, unless the diverse cultures assimilate to one, as used to happen in the US.

The Balkans are an odd lot - it’s mosly the Muslims in those countries causing problems. The Croats and Serbs I know (Christians) are hardworking and respectful people.

I’ve heard that there is no Japanese equivalent to the word “looting”.

IIRC, the Japanese word for 'foreigner' directly translates to 'barbarian'. Also, IIRC, most countries in Europe were ethnically homogeneous until recently; ie. the last 30 years or so. A similar event in Sweden, for example, probably would not have resulted in widespread looting then. Somehow, I don't think that a place like Malmo, Sweden would fare as well today under similar circumstances ...

IIRC, the Japanese word for 'foreigner' directly translates to 'barbarian'.

Wrong. The common term for "foreigner" is gaijin or the more formal and softer gaikokujin. Most Japanese use it merely as a description and not a pejorative.

The word for barbarian or savage is yabanjin. It can either be used as a description or a pejorative.

Something to consider is that since WW2, Japan has had a long time to reflect on the fact that they “looted” most of the Asia-Pacific region in the 30’s and 40’s and ultimately got their asses handed to them for it. That, the mono-culture, and a strong sense of honor and shame are all factors in their standing together and facing this crisis without reverting to barbarity.

You said the key word here, “shame.”

There is no longer any sense of shame in this country, everything can be justified, try to shame somebody, and the standard attitude is, “Who are you to judge me?”

In a time of right vs left, mockery and mudslinging - it is encouraging to see the fruits of a culture which values honor and respect.
