I worry more about Russia than I do about China. For the simple reason that a weaker country will rely more on nukes than a stronger country.

Lets take the US and Russia, for example. Rusia's only parity with the US is in her nuclear arsenal. Everything else, from economy to military, the US is clearly the 800 lb gorilla. GDP; US-$15 trillion, Russia-about $1.5 trillion.

China's GDP, on the other hand is about, $6.5 trillion and will likely, with the appreciation of the yuan and future growth, reach parity with the US by 2020. And beyond 2020, who knows.

However, I believe, as China's nuclear arsenal grows and approach parity with Russia and the US, treaties will be sought, and insisted on, by Russia and the US. By 2040, we will live in a world, where the US economy will be 5-6 times larger than Russia's and the Chinese economy will be about 2-3 times larger than the US. But all three countries will maintain similar levels of nuclear inventory.

If things go awry, it will be Russia that will use nuclear weapons first.

Also, Russia is not dependent on anyone for her natural resources. China is, and on every continent. China is more interested in keeping global peace than Russia is. Google "US coal exports to China" and you'll see even American companies are getting into the act of selling to China to feed the dragon's energy appetite. Ports will be built along the West coast of the US to off load coal to Asia and particularly China. And lets not forget the tar sands in Canada. So, not only are pipelines being built on the Asian continent to feed China's energy appetite, they are being built right here in North America (if the environmentalists can be overcome). There are concerted efforts underway to build an overland pipeline in Canada with the specific purpose of selling oil to the Chinese.

So, unless China can take on the whole world, she has no desire for global conflict. And she will be the stronger of the three major nuclear powers (I'm talking, in the future of course as the US is currently in the strongest position in the world at the moment).

China, in essence, is becoming like a large version of Japan or Germany, where she has to rely on the world for her resources.

China would be far from bankrupt. The hard assets in resources around the world gives them a floor

However when we default it will be viewed as a threat to their national security and they will pounce.

Surfer, I am not an economic analyst by any means.

As you state, I'm sure they are not vested solely in the United States.

Wouldn't American economic health be in their best interest?

Maybe you would be kind enough to explain in a little more detail; if any other FReepers want chime in, please do.

Regards.

No problem.

The big elephant in the room. China’s power is shifting within. The military is going to take over control of China’s government it has been planned for quite some time and that transition is beginning to happen.

It is widely known that the military is no fan of the US nor were they fully onboard with the lending.

If you believe that financial self-assured destruction existed between China and the US then maybe I could see them wanting us to be solvent but we don’t have that and in fact that same concept is exactly why Europe as a whole is failing...the EU is falling apart and they are already making plans to end the euro.

In any event China’s military see’s America as a direct threat and when our financial situation truly implodes it will create two potential situations: 1) our financial collapse will be viewed as a threat to their national security, 2) with the current administration + economic failout our country will essentially be at the weakest it has ever been and quite frankly Obozo has done everything he can to harm our long-term alliances.

Ever feel like you are being set up?

What do you think is going to happen when the Chinese military takes over Tawain? It is going to happen and soon.

What do you think is going to happen when we default on our foreign debt?

History is pretty clear on this. It ends in massive global conflict and unfortunately that is exactly where we are headed.

Did you see this today? This could be the final nail in our coffin...

That was the assumption I was making.

If it happens soon, I don't think there will be much we can do. Not with this administration. I would not want to be Taiwanese today.

That is why I feel they have an interest in keeping the United States solvent. not because of good will of course, but self-preservation. Unless they believe that they will emerge as the only unchallenged superpower...

I'm going to check out your link now. Thanks. I appreciate it.

There is some confusion on when Geithner said this. This looks like a quote from 2009 which was bad enough back then and then to say it again...however I reviewed the dollar index over the last few days I don’t see the drop so I am inclined to believe this was a comment from 2009.

However it still shows what is really going on here and none of it is good for America as we know her.

Hey but at least Michelle can finally feel proud of her country...LOL.

Her hubby has not completed his tasks. I imagine she will be elated if that happens.

This can’t be right. The profit uber-alles wallstreeters (including Loral) keep telling me that the Chinese are our friends.
