Ohio State is one of the top job generators in the state through its industry and research partnerships. In southern Ohio, Ohio State’s Endeavor Center has guided new business growth, resulting in $50 million in economic impact. Ohio State Medical Center’s $1 billion expansion will create 5,000 construction jobs. And a College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences initiative has been helping small businesses thrive in communities across Ohio.
The money is NOT all on campus.
Yes I am an Ohioan and OSU alum. You are obviously one of those people who look for the bad in everything and see nothing good. How sad for you. You can name every football player who has done wrong, and you won’t come close to the numbers who have gone on to become doctors, teachers, coaches, firemen, police officers, businessmen and leaders in their communities. I can recommend some reading if you are interested, but the information would ruin your cynical views.
Art Schlichter?
Art should have never been let out of prison the last time, and he is a perfect example of how all you have to say in Columbus is "Go Bucks!" and you get away with almost anything. The infiltration of the football program into the fabric of Columbus and Central Ohio, has IMO, been more detrimental than beneficial. It's a city of 800,000 dominated by an obsession for a football factory. No wonder outsiders think it's a cowtown.
You think I don't know that? It doesn't mean they haven't done a great deal of harm to the rest of the area. They truly are the tail that wags the dog in Columbus.
You're an Ohioan, but do you (or did you) live in the Columbus area? ( I mean as an adult taxpayer, not just as a student.) Because people who are from Cincinnati, Cleveland, Toledo, etc don't get it and they never will.
Going 8-8 in the SEC won't help.
Revenue? Yes, businesses ride their coat tails, but OSU football's $100 million in annual revenue is kept on campus, while our taxes that support said campus go up every year, as does tuition.
Ohio State generates more income producing activities than virtually any other entity in the Columbus area. OSU is a generator, not a drain.
They have waaay too much influence in this town. Yeah, they spin off some cash into the area, big cash, but is it worth the price? Downtown Columbus development is targeted by OSU so it can protect its turf. They try to stifle progress in the rest of the community if they feel it poses a “threat.” Google, “OSU-Nationwide-Dimon McFerson-John McConnell-Greg Lashutka-NHL” and you’ll get the picture.
Interesting image. If OSU is the tail, what is the dog? Polaris (shop 'til you drop)? Easton Town Center (more shopping)? The late City Center (used-to-be shopping)? COSI (bring big bucks)? Columbus Museum of Art (please)? Franklin Park Conservatory (bring a knife or a gun)? There aren't world-class attractions, you know.
Columbus is a three-note town. University. Government. Lawyers. That's. About. It. No mountains. No ocean (no, not the Scioto River). World's lousiest weather, except for maybe Cleveland.
The dog is the Mayor’s office, Columbus City Council, the media, various school districts in Central Ohio, MORPC, and a myriad of others.
OK, I see where you’re going with this. Can’t argue about those things. I’d throw in the police dept. as well.
“World’s lousiest weather, except for maybe Cleveland.”
Columbus: 6 feet of snow with an inch and a half of ice on top!
GO BUCKS!!
Let's face it, if you aspire to be a big shot in the civic and/or commercial aspects of Central Ohio but have no ties to OSU, you're in a big hole that you have to climb out of. No other university in a city of comparable size to Columbus has that kind of pull, not Harvard, not Stanford, not Pitt, not UC or Xavier.
Also, look at the pathetic attempts at local businesses, small and large, to identify with OSU. The one that really fascinates me is Rick Rosati, of Rosati Windows on TV stressing that he's an OSU alum. Who cares? Well, sadly, enough apparently that he believes it affects his bottom line.
When Big Bear was in business, they tried to hitch their wagon to John Cooper’s star, IIRC. Lot of good that did them.
And we all know that if you played even a couple of seasons for OSU, and kept your nose clean, some insurance agent, car dealership, real estate developer or radio/TV station is going to give you a gig, "just because." I mean, Demetrious Stanley and his pimp suits on Channel 6? Pretty embarrassing, although not as embarrassing as John Corby having Schlichter on his show twice a week last fall.
“Typical yahoo Load of Shit”
really? :)
“I mean, Demetrious Stanley and his pimp suits on Channel 6? Pretty embarrassing...”
That was hilarious! Thanks for the laugh.
Tressel should be out on his kiester.
I didn’t see the presser tonight. The wife and I were out walking in this “warm” weather tonight. Therefore, I do not know all of the details. But I’m sure there is more to this situation than what the public knows right now.
Really embarrassing. I used to be a fan of OSU in my younger days (in fact, I have taken undergrad and graduate classes at OSU), but over the last 15 years or more I have become quite disillusioned with OSU, the BCS and NCAA. It’s all about money. Get rid of the athletic scholarships and return to real student-athletes at universities.
Get the popcorn ready...this is just the beginning. Federal drug trafficking and money laundering cases usually bring a bunch of people down. This one will be no exception.
