If going “green” were such a great idea, some EEEEVIL capitalist would have thought of it a long time ago and made a fortune on it. Instead, the “green” movement costs jobs and makes our lives cold, dark, toxic, and miserable.

My V8 Toyota averaged 21 mpg this time last year. Now it gets 17 burning food. Am I missing something here?
The heat content (energy) contained in ethanol is about 15% less than regular gasoline.
Not a bit. This summer, we rented a Chrysler Town and Country van for a month-long vacation. We drove it 9,000 miles across the entire country and back. The $3.65/gal 87 octane gas we bought in California got us 17-18 mpg at 65mph. The $2.25/gal 85 octane gas we bought in Texas got us 24-25 mpg at 80mph. Effectively, California gas cost us half again what Texas gas was costing us while saving us considerable time.
The atomic weight of octane is about 160 and atomic weight of ethanol is about 40. However the heat of combustion is the important factor, but it doesn’t measure up either.

Yes. The ethanol-based gasoline substitute also ruins your engine. My mechanic strongly advises against using it, especially during the summer. My car runs weakly on the stuff with an awful sound and poor acceleration (and poor quasi-fuel mileage). After following his advice (getting real gasoline on the winter blend), my car returned to running normally.
But the ethanol-as-quasi-fuel-substitute-additive policy achieves all of the following goals of this Administration and therefore by extension of the American people who so enthusiastically elected Barack Hussein Obama:
* reduces the food supply, inducing widespread hunger, starvation, and mortality
* ruins engines, reducing the economic production and personal pleasure achieved through their use
* increases the cost of fuel, causing price inflation while discouraging travel and increasing risk involved in productive activity
* contributing generally to economic decline, unemployment, and inflation

Indeed. My Honda snow thrower was a bitch to start this winter. I didn’t figure it out until I read a thread on the sorry attributes of what I was feeding it. Turns out there’s a Sinclair station a couple miles away that sells real fuel. I’ll get a few jerry cans down there to feed the snow machine, and mower when it warms up. It may be a dime a gallon more, but I’ll feed the Toyo over there from now on as well.
Let me warn you there: some engineers in my office have concluded that EPA regulations make using a “jerry can” for its intended purpose (to contain gasoline) without special federal permits constitutes a felony violation of the Clean Air Act. EPA mercifully hasn’t initiated any known enforcement yet, but that doesn’t mean that the feds won’t quash your aspirations.
